Required for any BJ library,

This review is from: B.J.THOMAS GREATEST HITS (Audio CD)
Now in his fifth decade of showing us what a real artist is supposed to be, rock-country-gospel singer BJ Thomas treats us to some of the very best of his best hits in this 1972 compilation. A must-have for any BJ library (and shame on the die-hard fan who hasn't got it), the disc features BJ's first classics like "Hooked On A Feeling," "Billy and Sue" and "Eyes of a New York Woman" to some of his later chart-busters like "I Just Can't Help Believing," "Rock and Roll Lull-a-bye" and the quintessential classic and Oscar-winner "Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head" (which some might say is Thomas' signature song, though he's had so many BJ-identified hits that they all qualify). Some of the favorites then and now continue to be "Billy and Sue," the song of love doomed to death on a battlefield of war, the hyper-energetic "Eyes of a New York Woman," the simplicity of unconditional love and soulfulness of "I Just Can't Help Believing," and the moving force of maternal love in "Rock and Roll Lull-a-bye." Like most of Thomas' compilations, you can put this one end and not notice the hours spent in pure enjoyment. The kid from Oklahoma knows how to do it!

As a collector of hard to find singles from the 70's, I found this to be the best compilation of Thomas' top-40 material. Particularly nice to find were "Don't Worry Baby" and "Everybody Loves A Rain Song," both released when he was under contract with MCA.

Dang, it's missing a few,

Bought this brand new from a used CD store on the fly. Didn't notice at the time that it's missing these: Most of All, Mama, No Love at All, and Plain Jane. Guess I'll have to shop around to pick those up. Thought this was all inclusive of the hits, but maybe it's based on the studio he was with at the time, which always messes up "Best of" compilations.

I was looking for a CD replacement of a 45 recording I had of 'I Just Can't Help Believing'. Every other B. J. Thomas CD I reviewed had a newer less acceptable performance of this song. There are other songs on the CD which might be of interest. But if you're wondering if this CD really contains original recordings, it does.

A good collection of B.J. Thomas's original hits from the 1970s. They seem to be the original recordings. They do not include some of the lesser Billboard hits.

Average Greatest Hits Compilation,

There was some good stuff here, some horrible, and some surprises on here that made me like them, so it's your average compilation. Of course "Hooked On A Feeling" is classic whether it's B.J.'s or Blue Suede's. "Hey Won't You Play" I won't put who title because my hands will cramp up big time. "Raindrops" by far his worst. I admit singing to this, and it was from a little t.v. snippet that dealt with teaching kids about good manners, and values, and with "Raindrops" they were teaching Bad Habits, and I look back, and ask myself "Why?" I never liked this song. I really hated and still hate it; The message is one my counseler wouid want me to pick up on because it deals with positive thinking. Perhaps if it were in another key besides "F". I just can't handle it in "F". It tries to make it sound sunny, but to me the key of "F" is far from it; it does sound sunny to the naked ear, but when it travels to my brain, and down to my heart it somewhere along the line just makes me feel so blue....especially at the end with the little instrumental piece I just am driven to tears thinking about it. "New York City Woman" is a good pleasant surprise, and by far the best of the surprise songs. I feel that Thomas is a talented singer, and with me I would be probably more content to just listen to his songs on 45's instead of a whole album even if it were a greatest hits compilation. This isn't too bad, or all that good either it's just in the middle.
