Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

In this quick shojo read, 16-year-old Sakura has a crush on Fuji, the unpopular bespectacled boy who sits next to her in homeroom, until she finds out he works at a host club. Sakura tells him anyone with such a morally dubious after-school job is unworthy of her affections. Up for the challenge, Fuji replies, I will absolutely win your heart. Fuji proceeds to manipulate Sakura's emotions in a halfhearted romance contest, and the naïve Sakura falls for all of his ploys. Sakura declares a new crush on the more upstanding Inaba, chairman of the Library Committee, only to get involved in a shady sexual situation with Inaba in the library. Fuji saves Sakura, and Inaba admits he actually swings the other way and has a crush on Fuji. The scope of the story is frustratingly small. Sakura has no life outside her crushes, and no distinctive personality. The plot wanders just enough to stay interesting, but the reader will likely wonder where this is going, as the series is on volume 12 in Japan. The artwork is adequate, but Mimori includes an excessive number of flashbacks to scenes that happened only a few pages earlier. The hilarious author's notes overshadow the humor in the story. (May)

From School Library Journal

Grade 8 Up–Ryoko has a secret crush on the quiet, bespectacled boy one seat over. He's so mysterious! Her idealism is shot when she discovers that Ryunosuke is a host (a boy who dates girls for money). The problem is that he has made it his mission to make her love him. Again and again, Ryoko falls for his ploys, like feeling sorry for him when he fakes a twisted ankle. Still, there's something genuine about him. He bravely steps in when her new crush isn't everything she thought. It's a typical love/hate relationship, but these manga cuties actually behave like real teenagers. Ryoko is boy crazy, but silly and sweet. Her friends gossip guilt-free about their boyfriends. Ryunosuke is, refreshingly, not shy or perfect. The result is a delightful, well-rounded cast, and his job leaves the door open for more drama in the future. The art is serviceable, with the eyes usually floating in tears or stars, revealing their true intentions. The humor and reality make this title a good choice for teen collections.–Sadie Mattox, DeKalb County Public Library, Decatur, GA

This is a sweet romantic comedy that I have quickly grown to love. I've already read the first six volumes so I can tell you if you have a problem with the "unpolished" artwork in this volume it gets much, much better as the series continues and I can't help but love it. The character Sakura Ryouko is a very strong willed aggressive girl who doesn't allow people to mess with her and that is evidently seen when she is constanly being tricked by Fuji, the guy she originally had a crush on until she finds out what his part time job is.

At first glance this first volume may seem rather boring, but it gets really good! I found it rather funny! The plot up 'til now seems normal. I could relate to it cuz when you meet someone and you think good of that person, then you find that that person is exactly the opposite! So, I guess that's why I liked it so much... I wanna read the whole series!
