Book Description

It was a night of triumphal activity for the Society For The Elimination of Good Looking Blonds. By sheer chance, middle-aged literature professor Bill Yates interrupts a murderer in the act of dumping an unconscious young man into the local river. Bill surprises himself by rescuing the young man and unwittingly plunges into a maelstrom of murder, psychoanalysis and Shakespeare. Falling in love with the young man he rescued is either fitting punishment or just reward for his trouble, and it will be a long time before Bill knows which.

This specially-priced updated edition includes free previews of Quick Sand, book 2 of the Quick Mystery series, and Quick Change Artist, a short story set in the Quick Mystery world.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fast, funny and furious January 9, 2006
B. Quick is a delightful combination of mystery, romance and humor with likeable characters in an all-too-real world.

The life of Professor William Shakespeare Yates is turned upside down one Halloween night when he accidentally rescues the object of his dreams, one Brian Quick, and finds himself accused of attempting to murder the man he just rescued.

While many of the problems and issues facing gay men are present, they take a back seat to Bill's main problems - getting on with life, falling in love, and trying to find out who tried to kill Brian so that he can go back to being an ordinary academic.

The dry wit that fills the book is delightful, and I doubt anyone will look at their sofa in quite the same way after reading this book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyed the start October 29, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I really started off enjoying this novel, but whether it's because I wasn't in the mood for it or what, I found that after the first third, I began to become impatient with the characters and with the pace of the plot. I do enjoy character-driven novels in general, but so many of these characters annoyed me without being equally amusing that they just didn't "do it" for me. (I also found myself frequently wanting to shake Yates, the main character, and although I don't mind flawed "heroes," his particular flaws and character weaknesses bugged me.) It's the sort of book I probably would have found much cleverer when I was about 20 years younger than I am now!

I finally skipped to the last couple of chapters (after making it through 48% of the book) and read those, and it did have a sweet and satisfying end -- if somewhat gruesome for a couple of the characters -- and I liked the note that the novel closed on. The romance also had reached a sweet stage by then, which was nice.

I am keeping it on my Kindle and plan to go back and reread it sometime when I'm more in the mood for it. In my present reading mood, it just began to drag by about a third of the way through it.

Kindle formatting: Generally well written and well formatted.

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly entertaining romantic mystery September 2, 2011
By T.F.
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is a light-hearted mystery written with a wry, sardonic tone; "I don't think I'd have noticed if I'd run over someone, but I'm fairly sure I didn't because no one ever called me on it and there was no weird debris on my car the next day." The protagonist is entertaining, and misses a lot of clues, which left me in the enjoyable position of finally being able to solve a murder mystery before the denouement. The romance is sweet and involves some Heyer-esque misunderstandings, with a nice HEA (or at least a HFN) ending. Definitely recommended.

3.0 out of 5 stars free. worth a read. September 16, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
the start of the book just killed me. the main character is so slow to react, with paragraphs of useless prose detailing his thoughts about what he saw, if it was real, then on to what people would think of him in a negative light for saving someone from drowning. The book isnt bad! just frustrating for a detail and action orriented person like me.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great story but could've been better December 14, 2011
By DC Mack
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I'm a sucker for romance and mystery. I thought such combination would create a page turner, but that was not the case. I felt the story was slow paced. Im usually a fast reader but this book wasn't one of my favorites. I loved the characters but everything felt dragged out until the last 3 chapters.

I loved this book. Well written, and with a protagonist I found adorable. Who is this author? I'd love to read more.

4.0 out of 5 stars An unexpectedly engaging murder mystery March 2, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
College professor Bill Yates is on his way home after being stood up on Halloween. Having wallowed in his sorrows just a bit at the bar (the only gay bar in the area), he opted to take some backroads and drive slowly, not entirely certain he should be on the road at all. But when he passes someone stopped on the bridge and is fairly certain he sees them throw something over the edge into the river below before driving off, he can't help stopping to see what it is. And with that, he's pulled into adventure and a murder mystery like nothing the little town of Lythia has ever seen.

I enjoy a good mystery, especially when it's one that keeps me guessing and doesn't leave me with everything figured out in the first half of the book. And this one definitely met that criterion. Also, the cast of characters has a level of intrigue, as does learning how everyone in the small town of Lythia seems to be connected. The m/m romance elements ebb and flow a bit throughout the story, and serve as a nice background or complement to the main mystery in a way that just feels right on so many levels. Basically, the main story seems to be the mystery and C.S. Laurel wisely didn't try to make the romance be the driver (something I see so often in m/m stories - the author figures that's why the reader picked up the book, so they assume it needs to be the most prominent aspect of the story), but treated it as just another aspect of the characters lives. Making it all have a level of realism that helped support the main plot.

Definitely recommend this one. Even if you're not an m/m person, I think you might like it, since the mystery is what holds the plot here.
