This app does not teach you to play the piano. Instead it's a game where you can make some really fine sounding Christmas music using one, two or three fingers at a time by watching where black and white bars that drop from the top of the screen are going to hit, anticipating them, and pressing the keys at the appropriate time.

There is both positive and negative visual reinforcement as you progress through the songs like "Good!", "Great!", "Perfect!" and also warnings like "Too Late!" or a red "X" for mistakes. At the end of the song you receive a round of applause, a letter score A, B, C, D, E or F and some point and combo statistics about your rendition of the piece.

If you think of this as teaching you to play the piano and you know you don't know how to play the piano, you will easily be discouraged. If you view it as a game where you must just synchronize your one finger, two and three finger combo screen touches with the moving bars, you will see that this is indeed JUST A GAME with the sweet reward being that you WILL be making music.

It's fun and there are 28 different songs, but it does get harder as there are 4 difficulties ranging from Very Easy through Hard. The one thing that it does have in common with learning to play the piano is that it takes practice. Each time you do it you'll get better.

Varied choice of classic songs, although there's a few pretty obscure ones that I would have liked to see replaced with more popular ones. The games is fun to play around with. It takes up only 3.05MB installed. It will be easier and more fun on devices with bigger, wider screens that enlarge the keyboard. Controls worked well and the songs sounded pretty impressive on my Fire 8.9 HD.

3.0 out of 5 stars Has Its Pros and Cons December 23, 2012

This is one of the better piano apps I've seen, and it's fun, but it does have a few drawbacks. To explain, I've listed 10 pros and ten cons.

Pros:

1. There are a lot of songs to choose from.
2. It's a good device to encourage interest in studying music.
3. The songs can be listened to prior to playing.
4. There are different skill levels (easy, normal and hard).
5. The piano keeps track of the grades you earn on each song, at each level (beginner, apprentice and expert).
6. The different levels keep the app from getting boring.
7. The piano uses chords, so it's more realistic than most piano applications that allow only one note to be pressed at a time.
8. Although the product description indicates you should play this on a device that is at least 4 inches, it worked fine on the Kindle Fire.
9. If you finish, the audience gives you a very nice round of applause. If you get an "A" they clap with more enthusiasm! :)
10. The background picture on the menu is very beautiful.

Cons:

1. If you make a mistake, the song will not advance until you hit the right key. That's good for learning the right key, but it's terrible for helping you to learn how to keep time. If you're playing a song, and you make a mistake, you're supposed to keep playing to maintain the integrity of the song.
2. Actual note symbols and rests are not used, so you can't learn those.
3. The duration of each song is posted. However, if you make mistakes, it can take much longer to finish the song.
4. Once you select a song, you're stuck in it until you finish it. There is no escape key! If the song you picked is too hard for your skill level it's frustrating.
5.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good but not made for two-point multi-touch December 23, 2012

This app is a simple and fun way to learn the melodies of a lot of famous Christmas songs. I've been playing the piano for 15 years, but this app presented a challenge because you are not reading music, but pressing notes to a rhythm that is sometimes hard to determine. I'm using a kindle fire (first generation) which operates on a two-point multi-touch system, meaning that it can only register two pressure points on the screen at a time. This is a pretty severe issue for this app and others like it because most of the songs require you to play three note chords, which my kindle cannot do. If there were a "chord toggle" option to let you turn off the three note combinations and give you a two note equivalent, this app would be much better. The addition of a metronome or other rhythm/tempo signifier would also be fantastic so you know the pace of the song.

In short, if you have a first generation kindle fire or other device that uses a two-point multi-touch, don't bother with this app unless you are willing to accept the poor scores you will receive on songs because you cannot play chords.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun, but hard...and I am a piano player. January 4, 2013
Verified Purchase
I like this game and so do my 7 and 9 year old girls. The easy songs and some of the normal songs are good. However, I have been playing piano since I was 9. I am quite good, but this game is hard. You must play 2 notes at a time, throughout some of the songs. Maybe if I had an ipad with a bigger screen than my 7" tablet, it wouldn't be so tough, but those keys are too small to hit 2 at a time accurately. I haven't had the app for that long, so who knows what practice may bring. This is just my initial impression.
