2.0 out of 5 stars Brush Grubber Peels Bark more than Lifts, October 5, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: BAC Industries BG-03 Brush Grubber With Fiberglass Ironclad Extension Handle (Lawn & Patio)
I was disappointed with this product. The gripper head mainly peeled off the bark of the seedlings or brush that I wanted to remove. I finally wrapped a small chain around a seedling with the gripper's teeth biting into the chain and then it lifted the seedling. I also think a set of wheels would have been nice - both in moving it around and to give it extra height for a longer removal stroke. Interesting concept, but the details need to be worked out to make it a viable product.

1.0 out of 5 stars Owner user, May 4, 2010

Although this product looks as if it will work, it's made very well . . . looks great! Works horribly, does not grip saplings, on the pull the grippers rotate and the grip is lost, you start over again and it slips again. I tried this devise for 3 hours, maybe I removed 15% of my attempts the rest were not successes. I suggest you use a garden fork, get a strong one and lever the saplings out. This product is useless and will not make you a happy user. Do not buy this product

UPDATE I found a product that works, the EXTRACIGATOR is made in Canada. Commercial quality, works on the small and the larger saplings. The product is heavy and built like a tank and will give you a real workout BUT it works and works well. This one I will tell friends about.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not as easy as it looks, September 1, 2009

This works OK but you have to make sure the tree is not too small or too large!
If it is too small the spikes on the gripers do nothing and it just slides off, if it is too large you have to use all of your weight(in my case 230lbs) to bounce up and down on the handle of the tool. This in turn causes the lever point to sink into the ground! Now you are carrying around the tool and a heavy piece of wood to use as a platform to rest the tool on. If you have a lot of trees and shrubs that are 1-2 years old then this might work ok for you.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not for sandy soil areas or long-rooted brush!, November 13, 2008

I bought this item to help clear small (less than 1 or 2" diameter) brush. The tool works by grabbing the stem of the brush in a spring loaded grabber, placing the foot of the grubber on the ground as a fulcrum point and pushing down on the handle, thus causing (theoretically)the grabber end and the grabbed brush to be pulled up out of the ground. Here in Florida, the grubber doesn't work well because 1. the foot sinks into the loose sandy soil rather than acting as a fulcrum when you push down on the handle, and 2. the roots of most brush are pretty long, probably again due to the sandy soil and distance down to the groundwater table and the upward movement of the grabber end isn't much. Sum total, it just doesn't work well here. I returned the item.

I bought yet another ill-designed peice of junk off of [...].. My Bad! The jaws on the grabbing device need to be hand set or it does not get any grip. The return springs are too weak. Keep Lookin for a better designed too than this one! Tim

1.0 out of 5 stars Good idea, bad design, December 12, 2011

Other reviews were not good, but I thought I could make it work. The main problem is that the spring on the jaws is not strong enough so they just slide up the sapling. I clamped a Mole wrench on the sapling above the jaws to stop the sliding and it worked fine. After a few uses the cable became detached from the locking lever (bad design, it just stripped out of the pinch) so I now have to open the jaws by hand. A board under the foot is essential to stop it sinking into the ground.
The individual pieces are very strong, especially the handle, they are just not put together very well! The whole thing is very heavy and almost impossible repackage and return, so I guess i'm stuck with it.
