I am disappointed by Barron's Italian-English dictionary compared to the Merriam-Webster Spanish-English dictionary, particularly for use as an alternate Kindle Primary dictionary. It will only pick up and define an adjective written in the masculine singular. The Merriam-Webster is able to recognize the feminine singular form and the plural forms of both genders. After waiting a year for M-W to publish an Italian-English dictionary for the Kindle I bought the Barron's.

The Barron's dictionary will also only pick up on a verb if it is written in the infinitive form. The Merriam-Webster seems able to recognize verbs in most conjugated forms (except for reflexive verbs with an appended pronoun) and bring up fairly deep nuanced definition--unlike the stingy, terse, hip-pocket-sized-dictionary definitions given by the Barron's Italian-English Dictionary.

The inflection of verbs and adjectives is similar in Spanish and Italian. It couldn't be too difficult to replicate the utility found in M-W's Spanish dictionary for an Italian version.

We bought this book to use with the Kindle reader on an iPad, and as far as we're concerned, it's nearly worthless. There's no way to search for a word, as the dictionary is apparently intended to be used in the background on a real Kindle reader, so that as you are reading a book, you can look up a word in the dictionary. The description of the book did not say that, and unfortunately the Kindle app for the iPad does not support the dictionary feature.

It was also annoying to realize that this was only Italian to English. You have to buy a whole separate book to go from English to Italian.

So for us this was a complete waste of money.

I had been waiting for an Italian-English dictionary for my Kindle, and this one was a big disappointment. As a previous reviewer notes, it does not pick up plurals or conjugated verbs. As a result, it is useless.

How frustrating! I bought this and made it the default dictionary on my Kindle while I learn Italian. My goal was to use it while reading simple Italian content, mostly kid's stories. This dictionary can handle only the smallest fraction of words in use; conjugated verbs and plural nouns seem to be beyond it. It recognizes singular nouns and verbs in the infinitive, but of course those are the ones that I am learning first.
I read the reviews here first (I always do) but I figured it would get at least the nouns and their plurals, and the regular verbs. I thought it would be better than noting while I await a better dictionary. It's not better than nothing - it's constant frustration.
UPDATE - I returned it and got my money back. I also called Barron's customer support: the fellow I spoke to tole me the book was written long before the Kindle existed and the Kindle version is only a Kindle version of the text - it was never intended to be used as a default dictionary because it is not indexed to support the default dictionary lookup features. He said they have asked Amazon to remove it from the list of supported Kindle Default Dictionaries.
