This disc is a must for Lizzy fans! As far as i can tell, not a single overdub.Raw,in your face, and laced with melancholy, as this is Thin Lizzy's last show with Phillip! Recorded at the Reading rock festival in 83.The final moments of this gig,you can really hear the sadness in Phils voice. I agree with the other reviewer,"A night in the life of a blues singer" oh my god! John Sykes is feeling the end of this band, and his solo will rip your friggin heart out!! Get it..

5.0 out of 5 stars Does anybody has ever noticed "A Night in the life...", March 27, 1999

This CD contains the best song ever written by lynott, "A Night in the life of a blues singer". Throw an ear on John Sykes' solos on the song. Each of them is brilliant. The "quintessence" of guitar playing.

I guess I must have slept through John Sykes' brief tenure with Thin Lizzy, which drew very little notice in the US at the time. Thanks to postings on YouTube, I finally became aware of his contributions, and was blown away.

Recorded in 1983 on the "Thunder & Lightning" tour (Lizzy's last) and finally released in 1993 on this side of the pond, this long-out-of-print CD is well worth the search. My used copy arrived a few weeks ago, and has been in "heavy rotation" ever since.

I had seen Thin Lizzy in their heydey in the late '70s, opening for Queen, but they didn't sound as hot and heavy then as they do on this disc. Sykes breathed new life into Thin Lizzy, and I love the material they perform from "Thunder & Lightning" in this set, as well as the more familiar hits. Sykes plays here like a man well beyond his years, and shows that his contributions to Whitesnake a few years later were no fluke.

John Sykes deserved far more recognition than he received at the time, but history has proven kind to him. He truly merits his place in the pantheon of great rock guitarists.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Live Album!, February 6, 2008
This review is from: BBC Radio 1 Live (Audio CD)
I don't know if I've just got the volume turned up too high or what but, despite occasionally poor production values, this is one amazing album! A much more complete view of Thin Lizzy than can be found on earlier effort Live and Dangerous, this one really offers a career overview of a band that had an amazing trip through rock n' roll history. The band plays with incredible energy, the songs all have a ton of life, and it's generally a killer set. Inclusion of the previously unreleased "A Night in the Life of a Blues Singer" (a version of which is now available on the Vagabonds Kings Warriors Angels box set) makes for an even more remarkable album. How they let this song slip by is beyond me, as it's an incredible piece of mournful, bluesy rock n' roll, with some great and very emotive guitar work.

Of course, throughout this album, the guitar work is top notch. The band, at this point, may have been falling apart from drug addiction, but it's as it, for one blissful day, they gathered up every bit of what they had left and poured it out on the stage. Simply phenomenal!

5.0 out of 5 stars Killer Show, February 5, 2007

I do not own the disk yet, it is still on my wish list. I recently seen the televised version a couple of times on VH-1 Classic it was a great experince for me. I've heard of this band before (pardon me, I was born in 1976), and they've always heard on classic rock radio, "The Boys are Back In Town", and a cover of "Don't Believe a Word" by Def Leppard, so when VH-1 Classic was announcing a couple of months back that they were televising some classic live at the BBC performances from The Police, Thin Lizzy, etc., I decided to check the shows out. I can't say that all the tracks on the disk were shown on the televised show, but the ones that were, sound brilliant to this day and you can hear the sound of this band influenced bands that came out later on. I must say that one of my favorite parts on this performance was the call-and -response routine between the lead singer and the audience while performing "Rosalie", all pouring their hearts out, knowing that the end of an era was coming. I'm looking for this disk at a more reasonable price, if not I guess, I'll get the Definitive Collection in the Meantime.
