Cain, Derbyshire, and Baker,

This review is from: BBC Radiophonic Music (Audio CD)
This album is a collection of compositions by three writers from the Radiophonic Workshop; David Cain, Delia Derbyshire (1937 -2001), and John Baker. David Cain (5): Radio Sheffield, Artbeat, Autumn and Winter, War of the Worlds, and Crossbeat. Delia Derbyshire (11): Mattachin, Pot au Feu, Blue Veils and Golden Sands, The Delian Mode, Happy Birthday, Ziwzih Ziwzih OO-OO-OO, Towards Tomorrow, Quiz Time, Door to Door, Air, and Time to Go. John Baker (17): Radio Nottingham, Boys and Girls, Time and Tune, Tomorrow's World, Reading Your Letters, , The Missing Jewel, Fresh Start, Christmas Commercial, Sea Sports, The Frogs Wooing, Milky Way, Structures, New Worlds, Festival Time, The Chase, P.I.G.S., and Factors. This collection is often referred to as 'the pink record' and is a reissue of the 1971 commercial release of an earlier BBC internal library album. Remastered by Mark Ayres, this reissue includes two titles by Delia Derbyshire, 'Happy Birthday' and 'Time to Go', not available on the 1971 release. Derbyshire's 'Air' is based on George Frideric Handel's 'Air' from Water Music, Suite in F major. While representative of the contributors this compilation is not necessarily reflective of their best, or most well know, work. Some of the compositions on this CD are humorous and youthful while others range from bizarre to dark. 'The Missing Jewel' and 'Sea Sports' by John Baker could be soundtracks for contemporary video games and his 'Christmas Commercial' is 'Oh, Come, All Ye Faithful' played on a cash register. Delia Derbyshire's 'Ziwzih Ziwzih OO-OO-OO' is reminiscent of a ritual pygmy line dance transmitted from unknown planet and 'Quiz Time' sounds like its name. Every track could be incorporated effectively into a Dance Remix. The material on this album is to be admired for the innovation of the compositors in both their unusual methods in developing sounds and for the wider influence their work had on the then budding word of electronic music.
