4.0 out of 5 stars WARNING: DON'T BUY THIS PEDAL FROM AZMUZIK!, November 15, 2011
This review is from: BBE Free Fuzz 70's Fuzz Face Guitar and Bass Pedal (Electronics)
It's a good pedal but not as versatile as I'd like. I've read that BBE pedals are covered by a 5-year warranty, which is obviously exceptional. So I'm sure the BBE Free Fuzz is a durable, well-made pedal that's got top notch components. The pedal also cleans up nicely, so everything from a bright, clean or slightly overdriven sound to full fuzz thickness is available just by turning the guitar's volume and tone knobs and moving the pickup selector switch. But I also have a Seymour Duncan Tweak Fuzz, which--like the BBE Free Fuzz--is based on the late '60s silicone Fuzz Face, and the Tweak Fuzz has all the sounds you get from the Free Fuzz and more. So I can't recommend this fuzzbox knowing a much more versatile one is sold for a lower price, unless you want to buy this one for it's 5-year warranty.

But on to the warning in my title. I bought this pedal on Amazon from a seller called azmuzik. When I tried to fill out the warranty card, I couldn't find the model and serial numbers on it's box, on the pedal itself or inside the battery compartment. I went to BBE's website to see why this might be so and in the process learned that azmuzik isn't an authorized BBE dealer and therefore the pedal wouldn't be covered by BBE's 5-year warranty. BBE's website states that pedals sold by unauthorized dealers may be defective or damaged, stolen, or counterfeit. It informs you that BBE therefore won't cover pedals sold by unauthorized dealers, then lists all the unauthorized dealers BBE knows of. If a seller's name is on that list, BBE won't cover the pedal they're selling. So if you're thinking of getting a BBE pedal, go to BBE's website first and make sure the seller's an authorized BBE dealer.

As for azmuzik, I bought the pedal specifically for the 5-year warranty. When I found out that azmuzik isn't an authorized BBE dealer and that BBE's warranty wouldn't cover the pedal, I contacted azmuzik to inform them that I wanted to return it. They asked me to send it back by way of UPS or FedEx. I took it to UPS and was billed $11.74. Since azmuzik knowingly sold me a pedal that wouldn't be covered by BBE's warranty without telling me what I was buying, I think they should reimburse me for the $11.74 I had to pay to return it to them. If I had known the pedal wouldn't be covered by BBE's warranty, I wouldn't have bought it and therefore wouldn't have to spend $11.74 of my own money to send it back to them. Azmuzik refunded the money I paid for the pedal but refused to reimburse me for the money I spent to return it. So, thanks to this shady operation calling itself azmuzik, I wasted time and money returning this pedal. I urge everyone who reads this not to buy anything from azmuzik.

Excellent vintage fuzz clone. Could probably use a bit more bottom end, but otherwise entirely respectable. Responds to your pick attack and is easily controlled using the guitar volume. Good affordable alternative to the boutique reissue pedals.

4.0 out of 5 stars BBE Free Fuzz : nice (Si) based fuzz., May 28, 2011

This has a EHX bigmuff Pi sound. Definately more "fuzzy" not so much over-the-top squealable fuzz. I like it a lot, especially at this price point. Quality build. I could do without the HUGE smelly rubber no-slip pad on the bottom of the thing though. AND it's not so easy to get off.
