Don't waste your time, effort, or money on this basically useless little gadget. I had to buy 3 of them before I finally found one that even worked, so if you must try it, just go to Walgreens and keep returning them until you find one that works. Oh, and keep all the little bobbins of thread that come with it when you return the others because there is no practical way to refill an empty bobbin except by winding the thread on by hand. It will sew a decent straight line as long as you're not asking it to go through 2 layers of thick fabric. It sews with a chain stitch, so with one yank, you can undo the whole seam you just sewed. Therefore, you must remove the piece of fabric with great care so as not to undo any of your stitches. Sometimes the stitches don't hold and later on the whole seam just comes apart! I dotted my seams with fabric glue to prevent that, but some came apart anyway. Unless you're really too broke to get a real sewing machine, don't even look at one of these things. I have a real sewing machine and wanted a Smart Stitch to be able to take with me so I could work on my sewing projects while visiting a friend in the nursing home. I spent way more time buying and returning and fiddling with the thing than I saved by doing some of my sewing there. I'll stick with other projects I can do by hand from now on!

This is absolutly a non useful gadget. Had mine three plus years now, collecting dust. I always use my real sewing machine. Tried this the first night I had it, couldn't go through one layer of thin material, and I think I heard something break. But...for nastalgia purposes I have to keep this handy. I got it as a gag gift, I know the person who gave it to me spent less than 5 bucks for it at that time. I just had to put my word in for this item, because it was highly advertised, sold probably millions, and didn't really do anything. Stick with a needle and thread if you have to stitch on the run.
