When I read the title of June Kingsford's (is she related to Kingsford Charcoal of BBQ fame?) BBQ Side Dishes - 20 Quick and Easy Recipes I thought that she was talking about things like potatoes or corn on the grill, or perhaps a grilled dessert. I was very mistaken!

The twenty recipes in this book are all for salads, mostly with a limited number of ingredients and a heavy reliance on Miracle Whip® and bagged salad greens or coleslaw mix. I saw absolutely nothing here that you wouldn't find a better version of in any Woman's Day or Family Circle. The one not-salad recipe, Mango-Avocado Salsa, is absolute bare bones - no cilantro, no chives or basil, no tomatoes, no olive oil and definitely no jalapeño!

The book does contain an interactive Table of Contents that lists every recipe and it does correctly interface with the Kindle Navigation Menu. June gets an extra star from Grandma for getting that bit right! Otherwise, the book is terribly formatted. Even though the recipes are quite short they often spread over two or even three pages with huge amounts of white space. Everything is in an italic font, making it quite hard to read in a smaller format.

Don't bother.

PS - Aren't you glad I didn't waste 4 minutes of your life with a video review?

13 of the 20 "side dish" recipes are for salads made with mayonnaise, yogurt or creamy salad dressings, several include shrimp, which are precisely the kinds of foods you don't want at a warm weather potluck, picnic or BBQ, unless that BBQ is right in your back yard (most of the recipes do instruct you to leave the "salad" chilled until serving time, so I guess you do have to be at home to serve these.) Even then, 2 cups of mayo in a shrimp pasta salad seems, at the very least, excessive. While taste is highly personal, I did not find any recipe I would be taking to any potluck or picnic in the foreseeable future.

It is time to break out the grill to start the BBQ season off with a bang. Love the recipes for side dishes and know it will get lots of uses this summer. The best part is that the recipes are very easy to follow.
