Actually Works!,

This review is from: BD Digital Thermometers (Pack of 3) (Health and Beauty)
We recently went on a quest to find a digital thermometer that actually works. We tried some store brands, Vicks, and a couple of others. None of them seemed to work very reliably.
Our test was simple - we simply measured our temperature with each thermometer 3 times. This thermometer was the only one that consistently returned the same value (within .2 degrees). Many were off by 1.0 to 1.5 degrees (that is, your temperature may be 98.6, but one of these defective ones might read anywhere from 97.1 to 101.1). We returned all of the ones that did not work. While this thermometer takes up to a minute to do the reading, we'd rather have the accuracy. It has a very nice feature where it beeps every 3-4 seconds to tell you it is reading your temp correctly. If it stops beeping, it's telling you that you're doing something wrong (have your mouth open, or have it stuck under your tongue incorrectly).

Very accurate, annoying beeping,

These thermometers are very accurate and consistent. I received my pack of three and opened them all to do a side by side test. One after another, all three came up with exactly the same reading - impressive. Accuracy is the most important thing for a thermometer, so with respects to that it is a 5 star product.
A couple of downsides, however. First and foremost there is the extremely irritating "Accu-Beep" feature, which means that the thermometer beeps every 4 seconds while it is reading your temperature to tell you that it is working right. The thing takes about a minute and a half to read, so it drives me crazy! It also doesn't make any sense. Why wouldn't they program it so that it was silent unless there was a problem, and then it could emit an error beep? At the very least there should be an option to disable the "Accu-Beep". I don't think the shape of the thermometer is particularly comfortable either. I have had other hard plastic ones like this that seemed to stay in your mouth better. I feel like you have to hold it in with your hand. I did just realize that they also sell a slightly more expensive flexible version of this thermometer, so if I had known I probably would have gotten that instead. Also, it should be noted that the packaging these things come in is that horrendous molded plastic that requires 10 minutes of wrestling and stabbing it with a knife to open. It is molded in such a way that there is no easy place to cut across with scissors without doing damage to the thermometer or shredding the instructions. Seriously, WHY do manufacturers do that?!? The packaging didn't even do a good job of protecting either because one of the plastic covers was shattered and another was cracked. (I was too lazy to return them, but I'm sure Amazon would have exchanged them).

Accurate, well constructed,

Strong reviews from Amazon and Consumer Reports convinced me to buy the BD Digital Thermometer - after being disappointed by several other types over the years.
The pluses: - The construction is solid and the fit and finish are excellent. - Accuracy and consistency are very good. Our three BD units usually read within 0.1 degree of one another, but every once in a while a unit will give an initial reading that is a degree or so low. - The memory feature is handy. The thermometer upon startup displays the last temperature. - Battery replacement is easy. Minor issue: If you immediately take your temperature again, the unit will display a temperature higher by 0.4 degree or so. This and other digital thermometers are most accurate on the first reading. Digital thermometers have to compensate for the loss of heat from the housing. If there is retained heat from an immediately prior use, the unit will read a bit higher on the second (and third) use. So, rely on the first reading unless it seems wildly off. Notes: - This unit takes about a minute to display your temperature. However, test reports show that units that display a result more rapidly are less accurate. - Hold this and any thermometer in place under the tongue without shifting. The tip should be fairly deep into the back of the mouth for the most accurate reading. - Body temperature can vary 1 to 2 degrees through the day. Temperature is usually lowest in the early morning and peaks in late afternoon. Don't worry about there variances. Bottom line: A good unit that is well constructed and accurate.
