Editorial Reviews

Product Description
The epic poem of war and adventure.
Beowulf is the earliest extant poem in a modern European language. It was composed in England four centuries before the Norman Conquest. But no one knows exactly when it was composed, or by whom, or why. As a social document this great epic reflects a feudal, newly Christian world of heroes and monsters, blood and victory and death. Each Week we will be adding exciting new additions to our Classics Section.- Check back frequently so you don't miss these much loved-stories at fantastic savings.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not the Seamus Heaney Translation!, June 10, 2008
By Melinda Varian (Princeton, NJ USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Despite the fact that this Kindle book advertises itself as the Seamus Heaney translation of "Beowulf" with illustrations by John D. Niles, it is in fact the Grummere translation (without illustrations). This is another example of misleading advertising for Kindle books.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not the correct translation, January 31, 2009
This Kindle version of Beowolf is not the advertised translation but rather one that is in the public domain and freely available elsewhere.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not the Seamus Heaney translation, May 4, 2009
By A. Link (Seattle, WA USA) - See all my reviews

This is *not* the Seamus Heaney translation but a public domain translation that can be downloaded for free from a variety of websites. I'm not sure how people can get away with such blatant false advertising.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not a great translation
This text is the Gummere translation of Beowulf. It's a little forced, as often happens with attempts to translate the poem into alliterative long line, giving us line like "for... Read more
