Book Description

May 20, 2003
The true measure of a man lies in his ability to remain independent and in his capacity to command respect. Plain and simple. That's an epitaph I'd favor. Such is the philosophy of one-time Newark Detective Sergeant Mac Taylor. After retiring under questionable circumstances, Mac searches to find his daughter and to square up with two of his BEST ENEMIES. The search takes him to a recreational park in the Catskill Mountains known as Mongaup Pond. When a murder and kidnapping occur at the upstate New York campground, Mac takes it personally. With the help of two weekend campers (Jason Strunella and his sister, Cheryl Groden), Mac sets out to deliver a special brand of street justice upon the offenders. Meanwhile, Police Lieutenant Evan Falco-working within the constraints of the law-races to find the determined avengers and to unravel a greater mystery; one that leads to a startling conclusion.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exciting and Informative, July 10, 2003
This review is from: BEST ENEMIES: Murder, Obsession, and Survival in the Rugged Backwoods of New York State (Paperback)
This novel transcends the typical mystery. It informs and entertains. The author's many years of diverse law enforcement experience is evident. As you read the book you learn many fundamental investigative techniques at the same time as being absorbed in the action. The teaching and entertaining is woven together in a subtle way. You never feel like you are being taught directly, however you walk away with an understanding of the psychological and practical aspects of detective work.

The author's love of nature is also evident. It is apparent Mr. D'Augustine has a love for the outdoors and he is able to convey this through his description of the natural setting and its inhabitants.

The pace of the book moves quickly. The intensity never wanes and your curiosity and interest spurs you to keep reading. An excellent read!

5.0 out of 5 stars Exceptional! Must Read!, March 8, 2005
Excellent story that hits home for anyone whose experienced a weekend campout. A great introspect into the life of a tough cop...Mac Taylor is the modern, more rugged Sam Spade.
