Overall they are good basic pencils.

I love good mechanical pencils, and have used very expensive ones to branded disposable ones like these from office supply stores, and I much prefer these.

The lead breaks off too easily while writing.

There are 3 full pieces of lead in these pencils. They're not exactly gorgeous, but they're practical/function well. The lead is pretty strong and doesn't break all the time, which was the thing I loved most about these pencils. They've never jammed on me, the lead doesn't slide back up when it's too short, and they look decent. They're pretty nice for the price. They do, however, squeak. I don't really mind it, and it can be solved by breaking a piece of lead off with your fingernails, but it might annoy others. I'd definitely buy more, they do their job.

Good for school and people who care more about function than beauty. A warning to the male buyers though - there are some purplish-pink ones in the package.

Update to the original review:

Been using them for years now. Love the performance and affordability, since I lose them so easily. Highly recommended.

Original Review:

If you are investigating these pencils, I suspect you are like the rest of us: you want a pencil that looks decent, performs well, and is inexpensive (because you tend to leave them around the house, in books, at the office, give them away, lose them, etc.). I've found these pencils fit the bill perfectly. I've been using them now for a few weeks, and they write well, erase well, look attractive, and the various colors on the barrel are fun. My one modest complaint is that the see-through plastic barrel can feel a bit insubstantial, slightly bendable. But I have big hands and a strong grip. I haven't broken one yet, though, and this is a very minor complaint. I love good mechanical pencils, and have used very expensive ones to branded disposable ones like these from office supply stores, and I much prefer these. I can use them, and lose them, with impunity. They are, to my mind, the best integration of value: performance, looks, and cost. If you know of any better, please let us know. Highly recommended.

I am the navigator on a Sea Scout ship. We use these pencils almost exclusively for our chart work. They are inexpensive and work well.

These a pencils are okay quality. However, I was surprised at how easily the lead breaks, and the erasers don't really erase as well as other Bic mechanical pencils that I've had.

If you're looking for a 0.5mm pencil from Bic that seems to have a stronger 0.5mm lead, I've used the "Bic Mechanical Pencil,0.5mm,Rubber Grip,Nonrefill.,5/Pack,Asst" without the same lead breakage.

I,also, have the "BIC ECOlutions Mechanical Pencil, Medium Point (0.7mm), Black, 24 Pencils", and they do a nicer job of erasing. Plus, since they have a slightly thicker lead, the lead rarely breaks.

I have bought Bic mechanical pencils for years. I like them and usually recommend them. However, the lead in these 0.5mm pencils breaks too easily and too frequently for efficient usage.

I wouldn't purchase these again.

My daughter went through a phase in school where she wanted mechanical pencils because that's what all the cool kids were doing. These were cheap, came with plenty of refills, and she liked the colors more than having plain ones.

As a grad student I constantly need pencils, have a very messy desk, and no time to scrounge up lost pencils. I bought this and keep it in a drawer. As I lose pencils I can just take new ones out. Maybe once I graduate I can play a game to try and find all the lost pencils in my apartment... For now it is a lost cause and these pencils help me keep my sanity. I also never have to worry about running out of eraser since I lose them before they turn to nubs.

I don't know why I like office supplies so much, but I'm obsessed.

These pencils are great, but if you've gotten used to using .7mm lead pencils, you may find yourself breaking the lead often.
Not that it matters- they're still pretty and perfect in every way!

Incredible. I thought that it would be pretty easy to find pencils that work really well for me in college, but how wrong I was. I went through an entire pack of these between a spring and 1/2 a summer semester. They're cheap enough that I don't care if I lose one/forget it somewhere but at the same time I know it will get me through a class. They don't have the most premium or elegant look/feel to them, but common.... I'm a college student that needs to take notes and take tests!

TL;DR: Buy these for college
