I'm a cheap pen addict. I've been through all the gels, the Space pen, and some fountain pens. I keep coming back to the humble ballpoint because it simply lasts longer and seems more durable in day-to-day use. It's the one type of pen that can write on any type of paper (shiny, porous, etc.) without worry.

I had the chance to try a Bic retractable pen a while back. It was emblazoned with some pharmacy's name but I was impressed with its performance. I use black ink exclusively and, in the cheap pen market, a good black pen is really hard to find. Up until now, it was the Fisher Space pen - but it's far from perfect. The Space pen often quits before fully exhausting the reservoir. I compare that with my Bic Crystal experiences from when I was a child. I would hang onto one of those until the barrel was completely clear - all its ink expelled in use. Anyway, back to the pen at hand here.

I picked up a 12 pack of Bic Soft Feel Retractable pens from a local Walgreens. I haven't seen them being sold in quantities less than that. Even at a dozen, they were only about $7 - a little over fifty cents a pen. The barrel isn't clear so you'll never know when you're out of ink but the soft feel is exquisite. The click top is a simple (read "cheap") piece of black plastic but it's functional and resounds with a satisfying "click" when you use it. Further down the barrel is a slightly wider barrel wrap - also soft feeling. The pen is feather-light and well balanced and the line it lays is as pitch-black as the Space pen (a $25 pen). Making loops with this Bic shows almost zero gapping in the line - actually performing better than the Space pen. All this in a pen I can give away to someone on the bus (because I keep half a dozen in my backpack). I highly recommend this pen and will be picking up a 12 pack of blue ones for my wife (since she prefers blue to black).

These pens are great for the left handed. Most pens I write with smear but these dont for the most part for me. They are the right size as well for comfort. I actually go out and make a separate trip just to pick these out so thats saying a lot coming from me. But unfortunately Office Depot doesnt sell BIC any more so I will have to buy from Amazon, although I believe Walgreens may sell these.

I am somewhat of a pen snot. I expect the pen I write with to work nearly flawlessly. I have found that in the Bic Soft Feel. The similar Bic Clic Stic is what turned me onto this product in the first place - the real advantage the Soft Feel has is that it is much more comfortable to write with over a long period of time.

For the price, you will not find a better pen. I have been using the same Soft Feel for roughly 6 months and it always writes smoothly and evenly, never clogs, and has yet to show signs of degrading.

You don't need to look at pens anymore, you found the best. I use these all day, cold, hot, wet and everything in between, and they never fail to write. They are nice and plain looking so they don't stand out in a pocket, and feel great.

This is by far my favorite pen! It looks great in a uniform and writes exceptionally well. Great price too!

Between yearly orders of boxed dozens of the excellent Bic Soft Feel Retractable Ballpoint Pen, some idiot -- probably in marketing, not industrial design -- at Bic changed its perfect design to an unusable, worthless one. The pens now suck and won't be used by me again. Why? The long, thin, flexible barrel -- elegant, pocket-fitting, unitary design -- was ruined. The barrel length was divided into two pieces, with the lower section being of larger diameter -- presumably because someone thought people would want a bulkier grip. That I could have lived with. However, the way the ink cartridge is held inside the barrel is that a tapered tip retains the cartridge with a spring against a bulge on the cartridge, so that the cartridge stays in and its tip is extended when the button is pressed. However, now that there is a two-part barrel, writing puts downward pressure on lower, bulkier barrel section, while upward pressure on the cartridge put opposing pressure on the upper section of the barrel. The upper and lower barrel sections are not glued together, and their press-fit is not tight, so the lower barrel section separates from the upper barrel section. This causes the exposed length of cartridge tip to be reduced, the pen to become sloppy to keep steady in its writing path -- and eventually the lower section separates from the upper and has to be forced back, either by squeezing upper and lower sections in the fingers of two hands and twisting and pressing them together, or retracting the cartridge and tapping the tapered tip on a hard surface, forcing the two sloppy barrel sections together. Unfortunately, as the barrel sections are so sloppy, this has to be done about once a minute.Read more ›

I have to say that the design of these pens aesthetically is a little unpleasant, but that is actually a secret benefit because nobody wants to steal them and they are my favorite! They have a compact form factor with a comfortable grip. The ink delivery is consistent and reliable. This pen is my trusted companion throughout the work day.
