Product Description

Exceptionally light, solidly built, incredibly long-lasting and stable, Bic boats have built a solid reputation in the world of leisure boating. The new Sportyak 245 is the result of 35 years of experience and development ! Light weight, easy to transport, giving you excellent glide when you row, it can also be fitted with an electric motor up to 3hp. From carrying up to 3 people and equipment to an anchored boat, to getting out to the best fishing spots, to being a great toy for the kids… There are almost no limits for this super safe and versatile boat ! Accessories included with the dinghy: 2 oars, 3 rowlocks, 3 x rowlock brackets, 2 cockpit eyelets, 1 rope, 1 seat, 2-wheel system. Safety was the top priority for the 245’s designers. The relatively low cockpit rim and numerous carry handles make climbing back in after falling/ jumping out simple and safe. When empty, the cockpit float line is below the level of the floor, allowing the cockpit to self-bail. One, two or three people can fit comfortably in a 245. The catamaran hull gives the best possible stability. It means you can load up on one side of the boat without fear of capsizing. This shape with flat lateral sections gives also an exceptional glide, with an efficient anti-drift. The wheels are integrated into the design of the hull. The Sportyak 245 is fitted with two wide rollers for easy handling over beaches, banks and jetties. The wheels are integrated into the design of the hull and don’t in any way affect its performance on water. You can load all your equipment in the boat and take it easily down to the water’s edge. The rowing seat is fitted with integral “glove compartments”, and the carry handles and other openings make it easy to fit an anti-theft cable around the boat. The flat rear design was also designed for simple, safe upright storage, taking up less floor area. The BIC Sport Sportyak 245 is the ultimate, durable, safe, mid-size dinghy for a variety of on-water activity.

We live near a lot of lakes and rivers and my son wanted to take up fishing, and fishing from shore isn't as productive as using a boat. Plus we often go to the lake to play in the water when its 100 degrees out. I really didn't want to get into a power boat, maintenance, registration, insurance and so forth. I've done that before and it's really not worth it to me.

After looking at a number of fishing, row and dingies, I settled on the sportyak 245 when amazon had a 20% off sale.

This boat is a double wall foam filled model with two built in pontoons. Its incredibly stable (I can stand on one corner at just under 200lbs and it'll life the opposite corner but wont flip), cant sink, and if you cut it into 6 pieces each would probably keep a person afloat.

I'm afraid to say that I'm not smart enough to look at the pictographic instructions and figure everything out from that. I guess its cheaper to not translate instructions into 45 languages. I did eventually figure it out after throwing the directions away and just trying to sort it out myself. The anchoring of the row seat was really difficult to figure out from the pictures alone.

You'll have to build the wheel assembly and attach it, and attach the oar locks. Curiously, the boat has two row positions (four lock spots) and some oar lock locations on the rear. But despite it having two row positions, the manufacturer includes only 3 oar locks. So you cant move from one position to the other without buying a 4th lock. Poor thinking or another way to reduce manufacturing costs on an $800 item by a few bucks? Silly. Of course I installed the locks and after 3 minutes in the water wanted them in the other position.

The designer of this boat showed imagination and knowledge of what is needed in a dinghy like this, for someone like me who uses it to get to and from a sailboat which is moored on a lake (Lake George in New York). The stability is remarkable, allowing me to stand up without tipping the boat when I am transferring to the sail boat. . The wheels are a huge plus to help move it to and from the water without having to drag it, which is a first in any dinghy I have seen. The assembly instructions using diagrams were easy to follow. The general construction and overall appearance of the boat is very positive; it is solid and well put together and looks like it will last. It just and feels looks solid. It is easy to row and the oars can be easily removed along with their oarlocks and put right back into the rail without taking them out of the oarlocks, which is very helpful. The only thing I found missing was a softer rub rail; the one that is there has the potential to damage the sailboat when it comes in contact, as it always does when boarding or leaving. Adding spongy tape seems to prevent this from becoming a serious problem.

Overall, I would recommend this boat to anyone who needs a well made, serviceable dinghy that is easy to assemble and use and has some features that make it a delight to handle.

Hello. I am a fairly tough reviewer and do not give out 5 stars often. But for the design I had to give this BIC Sportyak 5 stars. I ventured out into a protected cove on a bay (not recommended) and this small craft was extremely stable. It has a tunnel hull design that reduces the rocking motion you experience in a typical small v-hull boat.
I use it as a 1-man boat with an electric trolling motor on the back and the heavy 12-volt battery is velcro to the first step you see in the front of the boat. It helps balance.
This boat would be excellent for 1-person fishing or hunting or exploring. It would work for 1adult and 1 child, but not for 2 adults as there is just not enough room.
The interior seat is sub-par, it fastens poorly and I don't use it. I fabricated a little wooden seat that fit's between the slats and placed a cushion on it.
Also, I purchased 4 stainless O-rings from Basspro and added two to each side. It greatly helps in transports, making tie-down simple. They cost $9 each, or you can buy ones that rust from a big box hardware store for about $2 and change them every season.
Lastly, the wheels are useful on pavement or a smooth dirt surface, but once you hit uneven or semi-rough terrain they don't do much good. I purchased a portable kayak cart with inflatable rubber tires and use a bungee cord to strap them together. Works great.
Overall, I would buy this again, and I'm thinking of buying a 2nd one for when my son or guess come to visit.

I bought this boat to row around the local lakes. I am a 69 year old lady and although it is a bit heavy for me am able to lift the back of the boat onto the tailgate of my truck then slide the boat into the bed. I also can easily pull it off the bed and lower it to the ground without any help. It is easy to pull to the boat ramp. I wanted something I could handle alone and this fits the bill. I love it.

we used it twice last year and the oar locks (heavy duty plastic) broke. it came with an extra set which broke this year after 2 uses. Can not row it without the oar locks.
