Editorial Reviews

Review

At times, a little reminiscent of King's, "The Stand," "BJ" is a quick, enjoyable, and frequently frightening read. The story is exciting, the characters realistic, and the ideas unique.

At 12:42 p.m. Denise, an African American woman of modest means, becomes pregnant and her life, as well as the lives of four others are changed forever. A priest in a small village in Africa, a homeless Vietnam veteran, an elderly widow, and a traumatized five year old boy find themselves beset by supernatural events and mysteriously drawn to the baby that Denise carries. It isn't until the resolution of the whole story that the characters themselves fully understand what is happening.

Technically, there are some rough spots in the book, but they are no worse than those found in almost any first novel on the market. I got wrapped up in the story so much that I probably wouldn't have even noticed them, were I not such a nitpicker. This is a great story with genuine characters, and some really chilling scenes.

"BJ" also offers a rare opportunity in the horror field, to read about characters that are not white for no reason. It wasn't long ago that the only role women played in horror novels was to be the seductress or the victim. Today, we find women packing guns and saving guys. Still, most horror novels feature non-white characters only if their is a reason for it. There are only Hispanics if we need gang bangers, African Americans if we need drug dealers, and Native Americans if we need mystics. "BJ" is one of the few horror novels available today that contains African American characters, white characters, characters of mixed race, etc. just because. It adds a new layer to the story, stripping away old prejudices, and there are opportunities for people and lives that have not been explored often in horror. "BJ" explores new terrain, and Aczon does it well. -- Alecia N. Conner, Assistant Editor - Burn

I think BJ is a fine book that deserves to reach a wide reading audience. -- Peter Straub

Watch out, Stephen King. First time novelist, Kimile Aczon, in her novel, BJ, has added her unique voice to the supernatural/horror genre. Aczon has created what she describes an "ethnic supernatural thriller." Her multi-racial cast of characters is complex and well developed, and the story is well sritten. Aczon is an excellent writer, her prose smooth and lyrical. She has an ear for dialogue, and each of her characters speaks with his/her own unique voice. The story is interesting and Aczon controls the pacing well. The suspense builds as the story progresses towards it's climax. -- Debra A. Smith, Dialogue Magazine

3.0 out of 5 stars A BIT DISAPPOINTING - review may contain spoilers!, November 10, 2011
This review is from: BJ: A Supernatural Horror Story (Paperback)
MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS

I bought this book after reading the glowing reviews and thinking that this might be a good read. Whilst it was fairly easy to read, I did find several faults that I found annoying - several typos (I know it's american but there were things like "rapped" instead of "rapt", and some dubious medical knowledge).

However these were really minor in the grand scheme of things. What I noticed was that this woman's ethnicity is really obvious. That is not necessarily a bad thing as she did bring to life a lot of day-to-day life that might be unfamiliar to many people, which I found interesting and informative. However her "white" characters were frequently 2-dimensional and clichéd, and this was a bit of a shame.

Whilst I don't want to spoil it for people who do go on to read it, there is quite a bit of religousness in it. I do get how it fits in with the story, but from the reviews I had read, I really had expected a horror story probably without such a strong emphasis on this area. My misunderstanding I am sure, but be warned.

Overall I had hoped for better; I didn't find it nearly as scary as anticipated and although I had guessed fairly early on what it might be, the ending was predictably annoying and saccharine. Not a horrendous book by any means, but in my opinion, a bit overhyped.

I have to say right up front that normally I do not do horror or supernatural novels.  Why you might ask?  Because I'm a 'fraidy cat, plain and simple.  That, and I've never been able to let my mind go and actually consider the descriptions and tales they are trying to tell.

However, BJ, written by Kimile Aczon, hooked me in once I read the back cover.  In short description, BJ is about seven people, whose lives are forever changed by one event; the pregnancy of one of the main character, Denise Johnson.

BJ is fiercest roller coaster into hell that you will find out there.  Aczon so vividly describes macabre scenes that will have your imagination set on FEAR and have your mind racing to figure out what dastardly deed will take place next.  Good and Evil have never fought to viciously.

Aczon does a wonderful job in enabling the reader to follow coherently all seven characters - both individually, as well as collectively - as they blindlessly journey towards the cataclysmic birth of Denise's child, and the climactic ending that results from it.

If you are a lover of horror novels, of supernatural novels, then BJ is a definite must-have in your collection, so pick it up today by clicking on the title above.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Real Page Turner, February 24, 2000
This review is from: BJ: A Supernatural Horror Story (Paperback)
Reading "BJ" was a thrill a page. It had some truly frightening moments. The author did an excellent job of bringing all the characters together. If you believe in the ancient struggle between good and evil, this book brings that struggle to light as you read to discover "BJ".
