Book Description

While attending an exclusive party aboard an aging Russian submarine, Aaron and his young date suddenly find themselves in mortal danger when the decaying sub is highjacked by a former Soviet submarine captain and submerged for the first time in 40 years …

HE THOUGHT IT WOULD BE FUN ... to help crew a luxury motor yacht on a month long voyage from Grand Cayman to San Diego.

HOW COULD HE KNOW ... that the man at the helm was a cold-blooded killer on his way to join a gang of conspirators in an international assassination attempt?

WHO COULD HAVE KNOWN ... that their innocent welcome party aboard an aging San Diego Maritime Museum submarine would turn deadly?

THE CLOCK STARTS TICKING ... when the submarine is suddenly locked down and highjacked by the gang of conspirators.

THE WALLS CLOSE IN ... on Aaron and his companions when the sub's hull fails at depth, giving him two choices:

1) Give himself up and let his friends and loved ones die ...

2) Confront the gang of conspirators and pull off an impossible rescue ...

WHAT WOULD YOU DO IF YOU WERE HIM?

---

In BLACK COBRA, John Avery picks up where his debut novel THREE DAYS to DIE left off and hits the accelerator, combining the romance of the Caribbean Sea with the horrors of modern day piracy and the complex realities of the Cold War. In a heart-stopping narrative, BLACK COBRA carries the reader into a realm of unexpected suspense and danger, overturning our most basic ideas of what is possible.

Editorial Reviews

Review

- Rating: 5.0 stars
"John Avery has a hit on his hands with "Black Cobra" for sure! Aaron Quinn is fifteen, mature beyond his years, an orphan living quietly on his own in a tropical paradise until fate introduces him to a couple that will end up putting his life on the line. In a plot that will take him in luxury from the blue waters of the Cayman Islands to an archaic Russian submarine in the waters around San Diego, Aaron unknowingly is put in the middle of a plot to assassinate the President of the United States and anyone else who gets in the way. People from his past are popping up all around him in a kaleidoscope of coincidences. If they survive, what role will they play in his future?
Aaron Quinn is like a teenaged MacGyver, creative and quick thinking! Or maybe this is how James Bond started out, cool, reasonably calm under pressure, able to get out of impossible situations, drawing the women like a magnet! Or maybe he's just himself, and John Avery should be congratulated for raising such a fine young man who is larger than life in his own quiet way, willing to share the limelight with other characters and allowing them to be developed and honed into realistic people able to evoke my feelings, good or bad. Like the spokes of a wheel, every twist and turn met together perfectly in an ending that made me say "No Way" and "I Love It" at the same time!"

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Sequel! August 9, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The first book was very good but this one was even better. The main character, Aaron, is a bit older and the plot is more involved. I loved this book! It always amazes me at the intricate details in many of the books I read and this one most certainly required more research than most. John Avery is a great author and I can't recommend his books highly enough. Number 3 here I come!

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent read July 14, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
"This story by author John Avery is a continuation of the saga of young Aaron Quinn. It is written in a youthful style, with short sentences, high action, and mystery. I've read the first book, "Three Days to Die," which was written in the same compelling style. fast paced and very well written, very much worth reading.

So you are aware, I was given a copy of this book to review and glad for that.

4.0 out of 5 stars Makes time fly by July 12, 2013

I was given a review copy of this book - so upfront I want to admit I didn't purchase it. I also haven't read the first book in the series but that didn't matter as there were only a few references to it - which didn't reveal the back-story, which is great as I intend to purchase and read it next.

Good points:
1. I was so absorbed in the story that time passed by unnoticed (one evening I thought I'd been reading for 5 minutes and found it was 3 am and I wanted to keep going. I think that in itself is a great indication of a good, absorbing story (and hasn't happened to me for a long time).
2. Really interesting concept

If I was being really picky I was left with some unanswered questions:

1. Why did the antagonists want to assassinate the USA President? That wasn't really clear.
2. If an assassination attempt against the US President in US Military waters - the witnesses would not have been able to disappear.

All in all - I loved the book and think anyone who likes thrillers would enjoy it.

5.0 out of 5 stars "Terror of the Deep" March 4, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
"This story by author John Avery is a continuation of the saga of young Aaron Quinn. It is written in a youthful style, with short sentences, high action, and mystery. I've read the first book, "Three Days to Die," which was written in the same compelling style, and in this story, Aaron Quinn is now about 15 years old. There are many characters in this story, but they are woven into scenes, one after another, of high action, suspense, thrill, and a touch of romance. Each character is drawn into an assassination plot of a high government official planned by a retired Russian submarine commander. This is a fast read not to be set down as the high action reels so fast it almost makes your head spin. I don't think Aaron Quinn's adventurous life will end with this book. I do hope John Avery is working on the next finely honed novel."
