Blancmange in the dark...,
By Douglas Harr ""rock music aficionado"" (San Francisco, CA United States) - See all my reviews (REAL NAME)
This review is from: BLANCMANGE - LIVE AT THE HACIENDA (DVD)
Blancmange is one of my favorite new wave bands of the 1980's. Besides partners Neil Arthur (vocals, guitar) and Stephen Luscombe (keyboards), they employed the talents of David Rhodes, the stellar guitar player better known for his work with Peter Gabriel. Their debut recording, Happy Families, is a masterwork of synth-pop while sporting more advanced and varied compositions than many of their peers. This DVD captures them on tour supporting this first record, and while I would love to recommend it, it a bit more for the avid fan than the casual collector. The sound is adequate but the guitar is too quiet in the mix. Worse, the lighting and camera work is inferior. You get lots of great shots of Neil at the mike, and if you are often focused on the vocalist, this will be an important record of the quirky yet very effective front man. However, there are very few decent shots of Stephen and David, rarely providing a glimpse of their playing technique, showing few frets and never including the keys. Most shots are overly dark, and not well composed, likely something that could not have been overcome in the small club setting. For this fan,. I appreciate having the document, seeing Neil lose control over the jagged track "Feel Me" and showing the richness of his tone on "Waves" is worth the price, but again, for the avid collector only. Track listing viewable in the image of the rear jacket above. Doug
