Book Description

January 12, 2002
This sprawling photographic history spans the entire range of memorable automobiles of Bayerische Motorenwerke: from the early 1928 3/15 (a rebadged Austin Seven) to the Z8 roadster that took the automotive world by storm in 2000. The story is related in complete series and model histories, and overviews of the company's forays into motorsport. Gorgeously illustrated with rare, archival imagery and modern color photography, this lavish treatment features classics like the elegant pre-war 328, post-war 502 luxury saloons, the curious single-cylinder Isetta, 507 sports cars, the revolutionary 2002 Turbo, the M1 supercar, the Z3 roadster and much more.

The writing isn't exactly Shakespeare. There are occassional run-on
sentences, but the writing does not get in the way of the story.

Along with the story which is presented in as much detail as I can stand,
the author challenges BMW party line about widely accepted stories which
are too neat (such as the folklore concerning BMW's near demise in 1959).

Also, the author questions certain BMW claims such as the inherent
superiority of RWD over FWD (especially in light of the fact that BMW
tried more than once to develop a FWD car of its own).

In the end, I get the sense that I got a more balanced story than
regurgitated BMW doctrine.

The book is a lot more intelligent than most books about cars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good read!, December 16, 2002
This review is from: BMW Cars (Hardcover)
I picked up this book because of my uncontrolled love for BMW's, and as I expected it was unbelievable, a well put together book that described the history, automobiles, company and people that were and are involved to build these fine forms of transportation, cars of motorcycles alike, that we know today. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves cars (German cars in particular), and enjoys reading about automobile history and the formation of a global auto power. Pictures are plentiful and very clear.
