I called Amazon and spoke with a great customer service representative. Long story short, Amazon is taking care of the situation by refunding the purchase price, for which I am very grateful.
Bottom line: Amazon is awesome! And I would never even consider buying another Bodum product-- not because the mixer broke, but because they wouldn't honor the warranty.
The Bistro is smaller than our KitchenAid, which initially seemed a benefit. However, the Bistro is so light that it has the possibility of moving during operation, except the Bistro also includes suction cup feet. The suction cup feet could be a drawback if your counters are insufficiently smooth for the suction cups to work. Furthermore, the suction cup feet require force to break the suction when lifting the mixer. Thus, lifting the Bistro requires a fair amount of initial force to lift, and then you have to decrease lifting force because the Bistro is relatively light. While the weight of the KitchenAid can be annoying when moving it around, the weight is a benefit with respect to the stability of the mixer, and lifting force remains constant when moving the KitchenAid.
One of the first things I wanted to check on the Bistro is how attachments connect to the Bistro. I was puzzled because the instructions did not explain how to open the attachment access. After a bit of trial and mostly error, I learned that I had to press hard, really hard, on the upper portion of the access panel and then pry out the bottom portion of the access panel.Read more ›

-mixes well for the first month. Made 5 loaves of gluten free bread with it.
-the splash guard attaches to the bread machine and not the bowl.
-700 watt motor should be powerful.
-plastic, plastic, everywhere!
-rubber coated plastic has a lot of bumps that aren't quick cleanup.
-motor has higher pitch whine than kitchenaid--maybe fine, but sounds cheap.
-when turning on to slowest setting, it starts out quick and then slows down after a few seconds... weird.
Overall, it sees like it mixes ok, but it looks and sounds cheap. I definitely wouldn't buy it as a gift. It supposedly has metal gears and a 700 watt motor, so maybe they didn't skimp where it counts. But knowing the skimped so much on the shell... It's hard to get past first impressions. So 3.5 rounded up to 4 for now. I'll be sure to update in a few months! :)
10-16-2013 update: My original review was in August. I'm still not a fan of the looks, but it's going strong with how well it works.
08-25-2014 update: I guess I still wonder how long it will last even though it hasn't done anything to make me think otherwise. still going strong!
04-30-15 update: The bread hook broke while mixing bread. It's less than two years old. We do mix a lot of bread, but that doesn't seem to be great. The worse part is that while the part is on their website, you can't add it to your cart. I called support and they said they can't add it to the cart either, so they would talk to their support and call me back. That was about a week ago and I've not heard back. I'm going to call and try again.Read more ›
