2.0 out of 5 stars Nice, except for the design flaw
I was really excited to find this mug; I'd been looking all over for something I could take in to work, and liked the aesthetics of these Bodum mugs. I carried that excitement over as I tried to ignore the fact that it didn't retain heat as well as I'd hoped, and that the top mechanism was a little unwieldy. I might have set my expectations a bit high for a travel mug but for sixteen bucks and the BODUM name I took my chances and rolled the dice. First thing first, I bought this primarily as a coffee mug for the morning commute and the morning at work so the thing I was depending on was that it kept the coffee hot and insulated. I didn't have a stopwatch running but don't expect too much after an hour--maybe I just drink slow but I expected to have enough time to finish the coffee before it dropped in temp. One thing I noticed is that once you pour your brewed coffee in you can feel the warmth when holding the cup which means it is losing heat. That's the one thing that kept me from giving 5-stars but if you drink fast or get a smaller mug size then that shouldn't be a problem for you.

Next is the no-spill locking top, I haven't gone through the rigors of filling it up and shaking it upside down but with the lid screwed on and the center part locked I haven't had any leaks yet. One improvement I would suggest is a transparent lid, as it stands now I have a solid black top and taking a sip of hot coffee is a guessing game of not over-tilting the cup and scalding my tongue.

Aesthetically the thing is wonderful. The locking top is a great design, and the double walled plastic cup is a nice sculpt. The last thing I'll say though is that because of the design the cup is smaller on the inside than the outside due to the insulating walled design--it isn't a big problem but if you like a lot of coffee or what-have-you than consider the larger size before the smaller ones.

Regardless, I was still excited enough about it that I felt a little sad when the outside wall cracked around the rim one day as I unscrewed the top.

Bodum was nice enough to offer me a "one time replacement," although I thought it had a warranty. I finally had my mug back. That is, until this morning when I dropped it a couple of feet. The lid fortunately stayed intact, but the outside wall cracked in the same place as before, all the way through this time. Now, I realized that I dropped it, but it seems to me that there has to be a structural flaw in the design if both of my mugs cracked relatively easily in the same spot.

I really wanted to love this mug, and for a while I did, but it'd be hard for me to recommend it to others, and it'll take a little extra convincing on Bodum's part the next time I'm considering one of their products.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stylish, dishwasher-safe, and (so far) klutzproof, January 9, 2012
This review is from: BODUM Anywhere Travel Mug, Large, Orange (Kitchen)
I laughed when my husband began replacing his desktop and bedside tumblers and mugs with these Bodum beverage containers and chided him for using what I couldn't resist calling "Grown-up Sippy Cups." I stopped laughing when one tipped over on his nightstand, right next to the netbook that's planted there, and tumbled (as tumblers are wont to do) to the floor. No breakage, no mess! We're delighted -- and hooked.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great travel mug, but make sure you screw the lid on tight, September 14, 2010

I bought this mug because I don't have cup holders in my car and I wanted to have a travel mug that sealed so I could put it in my bag and take it out when I reached my destinations. This mug is so awesome! I love it. It keeps heat in amazingly well; I burned my tongue today after over an hour of it sitting on a table. The cap comes apart for super-easy cleaning. The only thing I would caution about is that if you need the mug to be water-tight you should make sure to invert it over your sink after you close it; mine needs to be really tight in order for my drinks to not leak out.

3.0 out of 5 stars ok, mug, November 1, 2011

I liked the style of the mug seeing as that I can can drink from any place, but it dropped and the double insulation broke. I was disappointed. I only give a 3 because it broke immediately.

1.0 out of 5 stars Bodum Anywhere Travel Mug, Large, Red, October 17, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Product had a thin un-noticeable crack which became apparent when washed, as water got between the layers. The rubber non slip base was peeling on one side. The service from the seller was great, but the product was crap.

1.0 out of 5 stars Broke in Two Weeks; Poorly made!, August 17, 2011
I bought this travel mug (not from Amazon, but from a little local tea shop in Providence), and after using it every day during my morning commute for about two weeks, the inner plastic cup came completely apart from the outer plastic cup. It just broke completely into two pieces without any warning while I was screwing on the top! I'm pretty sure that the reason mine broke was because I was screwing on the top very tightly and this put too much pressure on the seam where the two cups were joined. Still, with a travel mug it's to be expected that you would want to screw the top on tight, and with this type of mug you need to screw it on tight so that when you unscrew the inner part to drink from, you don't unscrew the whole top.

I checked Bodum's website and saw that they have a warranty on their products, but that you need to have a receipt. Now I don't know about you, but I do not keep receipts for $20 purchases past the two week mark. So I was understandably annoyed that I would not be getting a refund, but I got some super glue and glued the two pieces back together. I also sent an email to Bodum's customer service telling them that they need to check the quality of their products (I also have a glass teapot from Bodum that has a minor flaw in the rim of the pot but is still usable). I sent the email over a month ago, and never heard back from them! Not even one of those, "We appreciate your feedback and will look into it" emails. Oh well!

It's really a shame, because Bodum has some great product ideas and it really seems like the quality would be better with such a design-oriented company. So perhaps I've just had bad luck with their products, but I seriously doubt that I will be buying any more Bodum products in the future.

I will say that up until the point when this mug broke, I absolutely loved it! I loved that you can see the liquid inside through the clear plastic. I loved that you unscrew the top part to drink from it, and that you can drink from anywhere on the rim. I loved the purple! I loved that it was pretty much spill-proof. And after gluing it back together it still works pretty well, I'm just being extra careful when I screw the top part on.

It seems this isn't just a fluke since other people have had the same problem, but perhaps buying it from Amazon would be better because of their far superior customer service.... Either way, you've been warned! Don't screw the top on too tight and keep your receipt!

2.0 out of 5 stars Bodum travel mug... cute but not sturdy at all, April 23, 2011
By

I purchased this very tall travel mug (two actually) primarily for drinking hot and cold beverages at home and at work/school. I really liked the large capacity because it was pretty easy to make iced coffee straight from our Keurig coffee maker, brew two cups of coffee into one container, or to have enough iced water for long classes or days at the office. It seems to be fairly spill-proof when the cap was oriented correctly, but there was still some drippage. The problem with this product, however, is the unbelievable fragility of the product. It fell off of a very short coffee table onto a carpeted area and the inner insulated cup broke out of the outer cup, rendering the product useless. This happened after less than a month of using the cup, and not on a daily basis. I love the look of the product and really appreciate being able to see what's in my travel mug, but this one is not sturdy enough for even gentle use. We have another one of these in our home and are waiting for something to happen to that one too...

Excellent travel mug - keeps the hot drink hot, for an adequate time. The two, gasketed lids work well and seal tight. Easy to open one handed while driving. Easy to clean and seems to resist staining.
