5.0 out of 5 stars We all love Boggle Jr.!
My 3, 4, and 7 year olds all get good use out of this game in different ways. (Also our 1 year old helps by stacking up the cubes.) I would recommend it to any family with preschoolers up to early second grade (older kids play with the words always covered). My kids have been able to play it by themselves with very little teaching. Other reviewers have complained about...

This game was recommended by my daughter's preschool teachers as a supplementary activity to help develop reading skills. I can appreciate its value in helping kids learn their letters, developing sight-reading skills, and even letter-sound correspondence. However, my 4-year-old daughter didn't find having to turn over the blocks repeatedly to find the letters a lot of fun. And a word of warning: some words can NOT be formed, because occasionally two letters needed to form a word are on the same block! I wish Hasbro would do something about this...

My kids have been able to play it by themselves with very little teaching. Other reviewers have complained about Boggle Jr's lack of buzzers, music, timers, and competitiveness, as well as the fact that their kids actually had to look on the cubes for the letter they needed-- these are all plusses if you ask me! This game has promoted concentration and focus in my kids, and the sound of busy, thinking kids emanating from the dining room is far sweeter than electronic noises any day.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not fun for family, limited as a learning tool, December 29, 2006
By
This is pretty much kid vs kid only. Adults cannot play along. You can make it into a solo game for one child, but its really more like flash cards for spelling if you do that.

The product is basically a set of flash cards for spelling, with some letter cubes for the kids to spell out the words. The rules propose two games, which are basically see if the kids spells the word right, they get to keep the card if they do, first kid with 5 cards wins. Adults can pretend to play along if the child is younger and will "fall for it." It really works as a game only if there are two kids the same age playing.

I don't know, but I can't see my daughter pulling this out when a friend comes over. Therefore, to the extent this is a set of flash cards for spelling, its kind of expensive for what it is.

Don't get me wrong, you can definitely make it into a learning tool. Your call.

There are many ways of playing with this game. My child would hold up the cards like flash cards and play "teacher". She would roll the cubes like dice and try to get certain letters. She would sort the cards alphabetically (find all the words that start with "B"). As she grew, her game play evolved. Now she is 3 and a half and she has no trouble spelling the words if she can see the letters. Turning over the dice and finding letters on more than one dice is just a part of the problem solving process. I expect if she keeps playing with it she will know how to spell all the words before she starts kindergarten.

I recommend this toy for very bright children. My child is bored with a lot of toys, but keeps coming back to this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars My daughter's favorite game!!, March 13, 2007
We received Boggle Jr as a gift at Christmas. My daughter is almost four and absolutely loves this game. She is learning her words and is learning to spell. This is a wonderful game for learning picture recognition and verbalization and moving on to spelling three and four letter words. I told my sister and she requested it for her son. He's a happy camper with the game, too.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good concept, lacks versatility, June 7, 2005

As a game, spelling primer, and spelling practice "free for all," this is overall a good value for money (shop around: $5 - $15 range is out there). A couple of BIG downsides when using the letter cubes for anything other than the supplied cards: 1) many simple words cannot be formed because needed letters are on the same cube, 2) all letters are not represented (not "cool" when your child can't even spell out his own name), very limited 3 & 4 word cards (trim 3x5 index cards to supply your own cards, but make sure the word can be spelled with the provided blocks!) It would be nice to have additional letter cubes available, especially to have all the letters!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent preschooler learning game, October 14, 2004

Interesting reading the other reviews. I guess if you have a very strict interpretation of what a game is, you may be disappointed that there is no music, beeper, timer, or lights. I think there clearly is a winner in this game, it is my 3 yr old learning word recognition. He knows his alphabet, but this game shows him that all those letters make words. My son gets very excited when he see that he has completed the word. I think this game is an excellent learning tool. I also breathe a sigh of relief when I can find a game or toy these days that does NOT have lights, sounds, and batteries. I do however, have to add one sidenote, and agree with another reviewer. We have found a couple words can NOT be formed, because occasionally two letters needed to form a word are on the same block. You can eventually spell the letter by changing the blocks around. This definetly is an error and can make things tricky for a little one. However, it is only a couple words.

5.0 out of 5 stars For pre-readers this is a great toy!, December 27, 2002

This is a wonderful item to encourage pre and beginning readers to grasp the concept of identifying each individual letter's shape (through matching) and that when put together in different ways, they form words for favorite objects.

This is so important to preschoolers and those on the verge of reading. Once you get the game and see it, you'll find various ways the game pieces can be used to help your child at whatever prereading level he or she is on.

One of the most underestimated games for this age.

4.0 out of 5 stars Educational but not very Entertaining, December 21, 2004

Rather than call Boggle Jr a game I would call it an educational tool.It is very boring! It has several dice and each of the sides are labeled w/a letter. There are also flash cards that you put in the holder and cover up the either 3 or 4 letter words and look at the picture to spell the words with the dice. That's basically it.Whoever spells the most words correctly wins. Not the most fun game but would be great to teach or improve childs spelling.

I agree that the "game" is more learning vs playing per the directions. However, a little creativity and a fun, educational time can be had. The newest version that I play with my 3.5 year old son has us splitting the dice and taking turns rolling our dice with the goal of getting one of the word's letters. He has fun rolling and searching his lot even if he doesn't roll a needed letter. Plus he can easily handle 4 dice. When you roll a "needed" letter you place it in its place. The player who fills in the last letter "wins" and gets to spell out and say the word. Sometimes we make up our own songs about the winning word. This version easily keeps him happy for a half hour at a time and he has also played his own take on his own.
