This review is from: BOSS DR-670 Dr. Rhythm Drum Machine
As a long time user of the original Roland TR-series drum machines and a firm believer that the Roland/Boss drum sounds are truer than just about anything else on the market, I felt confident in purchasing the DR-670 model when my DR-770 gave up the ghost. My confidence was not misplaced. Although some of the operations of this machine are a little counter-intuitive for those familiar with other models, they are not necessarily confusing, and once you have programmed a few patterns and put together a few songs, the overall operation of the machine is very smooth and effective. The sounds are, as expected, very realistic and well coordinated into various drum kits. The pre-programmed patterns are diverse and practical, but one thing I did not like is that just about every pre-programmed pattern includes a bass part (I just wanted the drums). Fortunately, it easy enough to change the pitch of the bass notes or to copy the pattern over and leave the bass part out altogether (a feature that I make constant use of). This machine can handle just about any song or pattern you can imagine, including ones with esoteric time signatures and crazy mixes of sounds and effects. It would have been perfect if the individual patterns had their name displayed somewhere so you don't have to look each one up on a chart before playing it, but again, most users will find their favorites fairly quickly and will not have much difficulty using the chart occasionally when they need something different. Besides, the information displayed on the LCD screen is, by any other standard, quite generous and a lot more useful than other machines I've used in the past, so it's not a major hindrance to not have the pattern title shown. It is somewhat inconvenient, however, that an AC adapter is not included, but fortunately, I had one from another machine that works so I don't have to mess with (6 x AA) batteries. The manual is another bright spot, as it is lucid, comprehensible, and well organized, making learning this machine very easy. Overall I'm quite pleased with this machine and it reinforces my faith in the Roland/Boss make, so I will likely be using Boss machines for the foreseeable future.

This is a very nice sounding, easy to use drum machine. It takes a little browsing through the manual to do certain things, it's not entirely intuitive, but spend a minimal amount of time with it and it is easy to understand. Great, clear sounding drums. Worth the money spent.

The best drummer I've played with for ages! This unit is one sweet dream come true now that I play mostly on my own. I just wish it had a more user friendly interface.

Ok for the layman........,

I thought it would be a great idea to get this, but every time i get these things you have to be a true
"tech" or a true geek to understand its functions. First of all if you call Boss, that was the most help I got anywhere. The store you just bought it from HAS NO CLUE like how top turn the bass off. Once you get it going it is a reliable drum machine. So here is what you need to know: 1. if you are interested in getting a kill switch to put on the floor; get the boss switch box that has the letter L. Switch boxes are either unlatched or latched. U or unlatched just prolongs your beats like fills, L will actually stop the tempo. 2. I spent about a week in calling on how to turn off the bass: go to shift then button 13. It will say ALL, Drums and bass when you turn the wheel.Find the right one and go on. If you want the 201 drum patterns, hit shift and DRUM PATTERN and you dial using the wheel, the patterns go from 001 to 200. Its kinda nice. 3. The Boss DR 870 has nothing to write home about.(too much anyway) 4. These patterns are sometimes listed inyou manual 5. I got so tired of people saying read you manual, i wanted to give short cuts to you all. So if you dont want to spend hours learning music theroy(which i spent 3and a half years on) 1. Turn on machine on (back od machine) 2 Shift then press 13 ,dial what you would like 3. have fun 4. Just remember you have to do this everytime unplug and plugit back again.(NOWAY,no memory of ) I wrote Boss explaining the manuals even for a person with two degrees could not read it.Boss states. "they were written in layman's terms. YEA RIGHT! If you can read the first time, I COMMEND YOU! It is a great little machine, but I do miss my drummer, but of course they can be a a pain! Enjoy it!
