I will not be able to tell if the original Canon BP-809 battery I was attempting to recharge has been damaged until I get a working replacement charger.

This works fine for the decoded third party batteries; but for whatever reason, with the Canon brand battery that came with the camcorder, it charges, but the charge is not recognized in minutes on the camcorder. Aka - yes, it will charge the canon brand battery. But for example; if you have 22 mins of battery life left and then put it on the charger, it will charge full, but when you stick it back in the camcorder, it will still say 22 mins left. Run those minutes out and your camcorder will still run until the battery is depleted ...but as to how long that will be, who knows since once you hit 0, you can't tell how much battery life you have left.

I'm going to try depleting the canon brand battery completely then charging it on this charger again. Not sure the logic behind why that may work, but who knows. As mentioned, it works fine for third party brands, fully depleted or not; and the minutes are still recognized by the camcorder.

Five or ten minutes after plugging it in the charger started crackling and hissing. By the time I got it unplugged blue-gray smoke was streaming out. The charger was very hot to the touch. I will not be able to tell if the original Canon BP-809 battery I was attempting to recharge has been damaged until I get a working replacement charger.

I bought this charger for my BP-827 backup battery. I'm using it in the U.S. I've plugged in my battery to the charger, then left it charging there while I left the room. When I get back to the room, it smelled like something was burning. Immediately I've notice the charger light was off. I unplugged the charger from the power outlet took the battery out and I can smell the burning scent from the charger. The charger got fried and didn't work after that. Luckily my battery was still ok and there was no fire. First I thought it was my bad luck and got a defected charger, so I have them send me another one. Same thing happend again! Don't risk setting your house on fire. DO NOT BUY!!!

I got this charger and as it says its compatible with the bp-808 battery. as i started to charge this battery i noticed the light didnt turn on to show it was charging. WITHIN 5 SECONDS the charger started to smoke, probably would have caught fire and completly fried my canon bp-808 battery. not too impressed because if i wasnt thier my house could have burnt down...

I bought this to use with the BP-809 that came with my Canon Vixia HFS200. There are several reviews that talk about these chargers. I would like to set the story straight about its ability to charge an original canon battery and have it report the right time remaining after a charge. The first charger I received was defective and the battery (original canon) would not report the right time. However, after a replacement arrived, everything works fine and the camcorder reports the correct time remaining after a charge. I have also used it with a replacement (third party) BP-827 equivalent battery, and it works fine with that battery as well....It is also convenient to have a car charger that lets you charge spare batteries during long trips.....

I ordered 3 of these for a trip overseas. One started smoking immediately upon plugging in, and the other two started smoking the second day. Not sure if the batteries have been damaged, as I caught the problem within a few minutes of plugging in batteries. I am ordering a Canon charger, as the fire hazard is too much of a risk.

This charger simply does not work for Canon brand batteries.

I have several Canon brand BP 808 batteries, none of them mechanically fit into this charger.

One problem is that the charger has some inverted "L" shaped plastic guides. The space underneath these guides is too small to allow the battery to slide into place.

(I have other chargers for these batteries so I am quite familiar with how things should operate.)

The vendor tried to be helpful - they sent a second unit. But it was as mechanically defective as the first. So this review ought not count this as a negative review of the seller but only of this product.

I tested this charger at home prior to a European trip. All good. In Europe I could not get the unit to charge a battery, so my trip video was limited to the two batteries I carried. The unit lit green (indicating a full charge) on a depleted battery.

When I returned home I tried the charger again. No problem, got a full charge as expected. Lamp glowed red until a full charge, then green. Europe uses 220 volts and U.S. 110 volts. The unit is rated for both and 50-60 Hz.

I can not recommend this item for foreign travel.
