I bought two of these 850 speakers. After viewing all the videos and ratings(see twit reviews). And I found that most respondents were terribly wrong. These items performed well above any expectations.Great clarity and base. And no problems at all.Maybe the rattle from the other review was from his laying the speaker on the sub.My friends all have Jawbones and Bose and we did active comparison. Hands down they said the Braven did them in.And when I paired the two for stereo separation Jaws dropped.Soooooo loud and full.Recommended.

Is the Braven 850 "THE" best sounding portable speaker to get? Well it depends (read on)
It depends on what you want

1. Indoor party - YES. IT works and works well. I have a 1300 Sq foot flat and it can be heard all around the house at say 70-80% of the volume. The sounds are rich and rounded (when on the DTS mode, else its bland). Yes the battery is super long lasting as described

2. Outdoor party - MAYBE. You can hear it. But you won't have that thump as it seems to disappear without the indoor setup. Idf you wanna sing along or a little faily picnic with some oldies runnin - PERFECT. If you want a dance floor outdoors - NO.

3. Dancefloor sounds - NO. There is a rich bass and volume. But it does NOT compare to a DJ effect.

4. Replace your sound system - NO. IT cannot deliver the deep bass your subwoofer gives. But its wayyyy better than any computer speakers I've owned.

5. Take it for Campng/Trekking - Camping - YES. Trekking-NO. This thing is heavy. Reallly heavy. So unless you're driving (or someone is carrying your luggage), this is a NO NO for long walks. And if you're a photographer, the camera+lens+braven 850= You're dead after 1 mile.

6. Looks - 10/10 - Classy look and always attracts attention. The usual comment is "Is the sound coming from this small thing!!"

So is it the best thing to get? Well... as I said it depends.

I owned a fake beats pill ( witch I adored by the way! ) but it lacked a bit of bass, so when the founds were available, I opened a hunt for a powerful, yet portable bluetooth speaker. From the endless choices of speakers out there, I zoomed in on 5 of them:
Beats Pill XL, Bose Soundlink III, Jawbone's Big Jambox, Samsung's DA-F61 and the Braven 850 ( witch in the rural countryside of Belgium had to come close to witchcraft ). My criteria were:
- Build quality
- Durability
- Battery life
- Price

Ok so Samsung lost the race right away: It seems that you can't krank it up when it's charging! No, NO and NOOO!

Beats pill XL, punched just too much bass. For those genres of music where you like the bass, it's perfect, but when you decide to give the speakers a workout by ramming some Death Metal machine gun drums down it's throat, it becomes muddy. Hell NO!

Jawbone's Big Jambox. Could not been tested! SHAME! I was looking forward to it. But remember, in Belgium we are 5 years behind on the trends. Wireless music is one of them. I guess people are put off by the sight of a red brick with big "child friendly" buttons. Moving on...

Bose Sound link III. Because in Belgium everyone gets an instant raging erection when they hear "BOSE", I decided to give this "60's toaster" a go. How was the sound? Just like the price tag: too damn Bose! Too much focussed on the "Porsche Cayenne" owner's club who like their music like their food: soft! Sounds ok if you love classical, I guess. The price tag of 300 euro's, made my nose hairs curl up. :( Bose has it's market of 60 to 70+ owners who like to pay for the brand name.

Strangely enough the Braven 850 ended up expanding my auditory horizons.

Amazing sound. I bought two of them because you can pair them to each other and have stereo. I have a Bose Soundlink and it sounds good comparing it against one of these. However, if you do the true stereo and link up the two Braven 850's together it blows all other bluetooth speakers out of the water. The sound is so clear and the bass is punchy and not muddy. These shine when paired together. Everyone that hears them loves them. These are normally very expensive but the sale price was just as cheap for two as for one. I thought I would try them out and send them back if I was disappointed. They are never leaving my side. The clarity is indescribable. If you can get them on sale buy two and you will not be sorry.

We bought one of the BRV-X at first and when we got it we thought it was terrible. Our little speaker we bought at Verizon sounded better and had more volume. Got to love Amazon's return policy as it allowed us to return it with very little hassle. We bought this one and holy cow it is ten time better than the BRV-X and it was only $149 on sale. We had it up on the boat sitting on a towel on the dock ( undercover dock so no worries about rain ) and a 45 MPH bust of wind sent it flying about 5 feet off a table and down on the dock and it just kept on ticking. It is amazingly loud and clear for a Bluetooth speaker. Also streaming movies on it in our cabin at night and they sound great. If Braven would get smart and just drop prices on these things to a reasonable level they would make up on the volume sold. $279 regular retail is just too pricey. However, from a performance point of view it is very good. Of course this is from a 56 year old guy who road too many helicopters in the Army without ear plugs. ;-)
