Engaging historical fiction,

This review is from: The Bravest of the Brave - or, with Peterborough in Spain (Kindle Edition)
A well written book, and the best part is that it was free. I probably would not have read it otherwise. there is great character development with sub-stories that make it really engaging and that help one get a picture of the past and what could befall a poor soul that got on the wrong side of a politician that had the power to arrange a press into military service. The back story about one of the main characters is just as good as the story about Petersborough.
The Petersborough story is good. This is not someone that made mainstream history, but it shows you how imperfect people with less than the best interpersonal skills can surprise you with the depth of their commitment to getting things done even when such can come at very high cost. I do not normally read historical fiction (who knows), but when my wife got a Kindle, it caught my eye. This book started my own interest in getting a Kindle for myself. Though I ended up getting an Android tablet with a Kindle app on it instead, the point is that this book is what helped me think about getting back into reading. I used to be a voracious reader, but college and career kind of put an end to that. This book was engaging enough to help me consider how I might get back into reading again. |
