A PLEASANT SURPRISE,
By A Customer
This review is from: BRAzSIL (Audio CD)
FOR THE UNINITIATED OR THE BRASILIAN MUSIC ENTHUSIAST, THIS CD HAS SOME HIDDEN TREASURES. SOME TRACKS LEAN TOWARD THE 1970'S BRASILIAN/ JAZZ FUSION, BUT MANY TRACKS ARE INSPIRED BY THE " MESTRE DA BOSSA", JOBIM, AND MPB (MUSICA POPULAR BRASILEIRA). THESE ARE THE MOST PLEASURABLE FOR MY TASTE. THE JAZZ WALTZ," VALSA PARA NINAR TERESA" IS VERY BEAUTIFUL, AND " CURVA DE RIO" IS AN INSPIRED "TONE POEM" SET TO MUSIC, FEATURING A BLAZING YET LYRICAL SOLO BY ULISSES ROCHA ON VIOLAO(NYLON STRING GUITAR). CHECK OUT ULISSES OWN CD FOR SOME BRILLIANT INSTRUMENTAL BRASILIAN JAZZ.

I picked this CD at a booksale at Baltimore's Enoch Pratt Library. The first track made me realize I had struck a good bargain as I purchased it for only $1.00. I can imagine listening to that track while lazily cruising down the road on a spring or summer afternoon. I also enjoyed the 2nd and 12th tracks particularly, but all the tracks are worth listening to. Truely a nice CD, as are most things musically Brazilian.

This Brazilian Jazz CD bases most of its content in the beauty of nature; and if on top of that beauty, you add smart / smooth / interesting cuts, and a coolaboration by Dori Caymmi, the result will be nothing but fantastic. You will also notice some Caetano Veloso and Hermeto Pascoal influence in Daniel. A 10 star album and a must-have for any Brazilian and Brazilian Jazz aficionados.PS. About the "Brazsil" controversy, I think it symbolizes the great fusion of US and Brasil music that we all enjoy so much.

The previous review from 1999, "oreimelhor" was written by me too. I was thinking - I just purchased BENJAMIN Taubkin's last cd from Brasil- to re-listen to DANIEL's offering, I had not listened to the cd in a while.Since there has been a newfound interest in Brasilian musics, MPB, BossaNova, Samba, and also new musics from rising stars as Lenine, Carlinhos Brown, Bebel Gilberto, etc etc.... This release of Daniel Taubkin ranks with the best of them, so I HATE to see it fall by the wayside! New cds from Gil, O Caetano, Bosco, lately.....if you liked 'em, this one should be "for you" also! Another thing, I HATE THE US RELEASE TITLE, "BRAZSIL", the Brasilian title is "SEJA COMO FOR".MUCH MUCH BETTER.(I DONT THINK I WOULD LIKE USA SPELLED "AMERIKCA" EITHER, HEHEHEHEHE. Anyway, I recently pulled this one offa the cd rack , and listening to it again reaffirmed the pleasurable qualities of the musics within! Try it, there are just a couple of "throwaway" tracks, the! rest, 100 stars! A nice combination of Bossa and Jazzier compositions, and a nice tribute composition to Tom Jobim too! |
