I’ve been working with a trainer and a nutritionist over the past 9 months to do two things: Lose Fat, Put on Muscle.

There are a lot of catch-22’s when going with this approach. You can’t eat a lot, but you need to eat to eat often. You need to eat a lot of protein, but you can’t just slam burgers and chicken and hope to lose the fat. The approach that we took was to load up on premium protein, and also balance that with vitamins and metabolizers like this supplement, in order to keep my protein and caloric intake in that proper zone that lets you put on muscle and lose weight.

Essentially you have to really be in the optimum zone to do these things at the same time, and we’ve found that taking the protein alongside the right supplements is the way to do it. There are forums dedicated to finding the zone, but in a nutshell you have to literally ‘consume’ (I don’t want to say eat because sometimes it’s drinking) calories every 2-3 hours. You also want your body to constantly burn these calories, preferably before going to A) your muscle, and B) your fat. If you question why it’s NOT good to burn this existing fat, the reason is because your body will ALWAYS burn both fat and muscle. This why you need to boost your metabolism to the point where on any rest days you’re burning the fat in your body, and on work-out days you’re burning the stuff you’re eating.

Anyway, I recommend researching thoroughly to find the right combination that helps you, but hopefully this review will set you on the right track.

So I'm 24, and have been lifting weights seriously for about 6 years. I'm 5'10, 190 ~9 to 10% bodyfat, and try to get about 200g of protein per day, more when I'm on a bulk. I'm not a BIG eater or anything, so I utilize whey protein to hit my daily protein macro everyday. I've tried a number of brands: Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard Whey, Dyamatize Elite Gourmet Protein, Muscle Milk, and even GNC brand protein (tasted SO bad I threw out 1 lb worth, seriously). I can honestly say that all the brands above, with the exception of GNC, taste pretty good. Syntha-6 is no different. Mixed with either water, milk or made as a shake with fruit it tastes great. I've tried Vanilla Ice Cream, Chocolate Milkshake and Banana. If it's too sweet, just add more water. I generally use a scoop in the morning and a scoop (both times with water) after workout mixed with my blender bottle.

To the people that think drinking whey protein will magically help you gain muscle... it won't by itself. You need a steady and intense workout, while eating a healthy diet overall and getting enough sleep. Protein is a supplement that will help aid your diet if you don't have the time or appetite to eat enough food/protein. If you're looking for a good dietary supplement, then Syntha-6 is a great choice. I can honestly say that it is a quality whey protein, tastes great, and does do what it's supposed to. The price won't break the bank, and the prices here on amazon are the best that I've seen.

Don't get sucked into marketing. I'll shoot out some quick basics then get into a product specific review:

Why Whey? - Whey is a staple in the diet of a lifter. The additional protein should be just that, additional protein. It's important that you add whey to your diet and avoid the temptation to substitute it for a meal. Whey is fast acting and can be used at any point in the day.

Uses- Personally I have two of these shakes per day.

-Morning I blend up quick oats and 1 scoop of powder, alone without any liquids. This gets the oats down to a fine grain and makes it more palatable when drinking. I then combine it with a Banana, 2 tbsp of Peanut Butter and Milk (water if i'm cutting).

-Evening - Post Gym Shake 1 scoop with water and 1 tbsp of PB.

Why Syntha-6 -

Fiber - 20% DV which means that it covers 40% of my daily requirement. My second meal of the day is Kashi Good Friends (50% DV of fiber) puts me at 90% for the day. Other meals cover the rest. Fiber for me was always tough to meet. This combination is great and SYNTHA-6 has one of if not the highest concentrations of it.

Taste - Chocolate PB blends amazing with my breakfast shake. There is absolutely no meal that I look forward to more. It's smooth and creamy.

BCAAs - Help in protein synthesis. Not present in all powders.

Cons

Moderate level of Carbs - Might be a problem for people trying to lose weight.

Bottom Line:

Have a tub of this or 100% Gold Standard by Optimum protein at all times. I say this because both brands stick to the basics. They have all of what you need and none of what you don't (or may be supplementing separately).

Do yourself a favor and read the nutrition facts and ingredients before you purchase. Bought this because it was $8 cheaper than my usual 5 lb bucket, but didn't realize what I was actually paying for.

With only 44% of the calories actually coming from protein, marketing this product as a "protein" powder seems disingenuous - it would be more suited as meal replacement than protein supplementation. It also contains a lot of fillers, including *corn syrup solids*. A deeper look reveals this product for what it is - a fluffed up, misleadingly marketed container for stretching expensive proteins with cheap fillers.

Let's look at the stats, comparing value as of 3/22/2014:

Syntha-6: 48 servings of 22g protein (currently $50) = ***21.3 g / dollar***
Optimum: 74 servings of 24g protein (currently $58) = ***30.6 g / dollar***

Now what looks like a better deal? Especially considering all the other gunk you have to consume to get those protein calories with Syntha-6. Don't make my mistake if you are looking for a good extra source of protein!

Here are the nutrition facts:

200 calories, 48 servings:
6g fat
15g carbs
22g protein
