I bought this so I can 1. watch bluray movies on my laptop and 2. backup data on bluray discs. This product does all those things and barely takes up any room on my desk! I like that the cables retract into the box when not in use, but I wish they were just an inch or two longer so I could use this without it being directly next to my laptop. I also like that this unit has a 2nd USB cable for power that you only plug in when needed. As of now I have successfully burned 5 bluray discs (with one failure, but I can't tell if it was the disc or the drive's fault).

I am giving this four stars instead of five for the following annoyances:
1. Every now and then when I insert a bluray disc, the unit won't recognize that I did. I sometimes have to take out the disc and re-insert it to get it to start spinning up. But I watch bluray discs on my laptop so rarely that it isn't a big deal for me.
2. The CyberLink software package is frustrating, to say the least. You have to PAY for phone technical support, which is a joke. My laptop was unable to play bluray discs at first, and CyberLink was entirely unhelpful. I eventually fixed it myself when I realized that my laptop has a "switchable" graphics card that requires 2 separate drivers (and I only had one installed). Now everything works well. Another annoying thing is that the CyberLink software package constantly assaults you with ads to upgrade to the latest and greatest edition. Come on...

Otherwise a good product with a great price!

I was looking for a portable Blu-Ray player/writer to go with my HP Envy 14 Spectre edition ultrabook and I decided to purchase this portable drive, as the DVD only version was well reviewed. Definitely glad I purchased it.

Pros:
- Single USB cable required for power. NO power adapters are needed. (This worked well with my HP and Dell XPS 17 while playing and burning DVDs). However, if your laptop does not have a strong enough motherboard, the drive comes with two built in USB cables to use to USB ports to get enought power. If your USB ports have lightening bolts markings(meaning they can be used to charge devices), they are more than strong enough :)
- Quick recognition. All my computers recognized it at startup and I was able to play my movies without installing drivers on Windows 7
- Very quite operation with just a slight whirl sound.
- One of a few drives which support the new High Compacity Blu-ray format allowing you to store upto 128gb on a single blu-ray disc.
- Cable management built into the casing allowing the cables to be hidden nicely int the drive housing
- Slim profile. About 3/4 of an inch thick. Great for putting into a laptop bag.
- Slot loading instead of clam shell. I have heard issues with Clam shell drive clips breaking and then you cannot close the drive.

Cons:
- finger print magnet do to the shiny black surface.
- USB 2.0 instead of 3.0 (Very very very few portable blu-ray players are usb 3)

Overrall:
Definitely an excellent drive. Since I have had it, I have used to to create windows restore disks, used it to boot windows during installations, and enjoyed a nice blu-ray.

** Edited 7/19/2014 to correct software description and compulsively fix a few typos/minor goofs.

Thanks to the previous reviewers for alerting me to the unusual connections this unit uses. So I gave it a lot more thought than usual for an optical drive, and decided that it would be fine for my needs. Here are my thoughts. Your mileage may vary.

MY NEEDS (electronic): My new lightweight notebook lacks an internal optical drive. Though I'd rarely needed to use the built-in drives on my older machines, one is still valuable for certain tasks like loading software and giving photos and slide shows to folks who don't use computers. I bought a cheap external DVD drive with the computer, but couldn't find it when my machine suddenly required a BUNCH of troubleshooting, backups, and reinstalls. So I decided to get a new drive with a nicer set of features, including full Blu-Ray R/W. This has 4-layer BD capability for up to 128gB discs I might want to use in the future.

FEATURES/PROBLEMS/BENEFITS:

1. DOUBLE CABLE DESIGN: This is needed because an electromechanical drive like this may require more than the standard 500 milliamperes (mA) that an ordinary USB 2.0 port is required to provide. If the drive doesn't get enough current, it won't work--or worse, work unreliably. Connecting to a second port gets you up to an ample 1000 mA. If you don't happen to have an available second port, there is a jack on the back for a 5V external power supply. I have not tried this yet.

2. SHORT CABLES: This turns our to be a plus for me, as this unit has a clever design which stores the cables nicely around the drive case so they are easy to pack. No coiling, no ties. One small black box to toss in the suitcase.

If your reading some the other reviews about this burner you may have become a bit hesitant in picking up this burner. Let me clear a few things up.

1. Yes it works with Macs. Here's the thing, Macs do not come with any Blu-Ray player support. However there are several free Blu-Ray players you can find if you just google it. However, Macs can burn and read Blu-Ray natively, just not movie playback with out 3rd party software. I was able to burn a Blu-Ray movie from an ISO I had and play it back on my PS4. I also successfully burned a CD and DVD in case you were wondering about that.

2. Yes, the USB cord is a little short, but you know what? It's a portable burner. The cords store nicely for great portability in the side of the unit. But you can extend them if you really want to since it the highest rated Blu-Ray player all together. Either use 1 to 2 USB extender cables (they are cheep), or buy a longer dual USB cable as you can detach the built in cable. Also, there is a place where you can plugin an AC adaptor (sold separately) if you have a computer with only one low powered USB port. Personally I had to use both USB cables on my MacBook Pro but only needed one with my Surface Pro 2.

In closing I love this burner. It's small and portable, not loud, compatible, fast enough at 6x, and it just works. On a side note, some people have posted reviews saying they bought Toast with this player but it dose not work. Well it dose work but it has known issue ripping, it's not just this player, had it happen with others. But fear not, there is other software out there if you google it.
