This is not the buffalo quality I expect and their warranty is questionable, espeically for their high end Extreme Ministation USB3 product. I purchased this product new on January 8 2012, used it without issues for 3 months, took it on my extended vaction and when I got there I set up the same laptop I always used it with, plugged in the units USB cable and nothing! Its built in light did not light and its harddrive did not make a sound; not a good sign. I plugged in another very old ministation and everything worked fine. Both ministations were backed side-by-side in the same case logic hardsided storage container. I tried everything I could to make it even light, to no avail. I then called their Tech support and was told they would send me a new one through their Warranty RMA procedure. Step 1 requires that I send them a copy of my purchase order - how many people carry a copy of their proof of purchase order with them when they go on vacation? I certainly do not and without it I am dead in the water. In the meantime I read through their "Advance Replacement Warranty agreement, which they require you to agree to before anything happens. To start with they require a payment of $30 as a non-refundable processing and handling fee!!! In addition on the second page of the Agreement they state that you will receive a REFURBISHED unit as a replacement unit! What are they thinking? I carefully made my original purchase decision based on the EXTREME PROECTION offered by this device and I expected far better reliability and performance than I received from this unit. I guess this is what they consider EXTREME ... you get to pay $30 for a processing fee to get a refurbished Warranty replacement unit for a 3 month old NEW device covered by their 3 year warranty.Read more ›

Although I appreciate the promised ruggedness and the USB3 connection, the drive is a bit on the slow side. The drive couldn't keep up with the demand VMWare put on it (Workstation) despite the USB3 connection. My external 2.5" drives do just fine. As it turns out, the Buffalo has a 5400rpm SATA drive. (I dare you to find that spec on the product page). I haven't dropped it to test its resilience, but it's supposed to tolerate drops from up to 2 meters.

Another surprise, the drive din't fit into a standard Case Logic case. And although I ordered red, Amazon sent a black one.

So overall, the drive did OK. Just didn't live up to my expectations. Perhaps it's my fault?

Had it about a month. Gave it a good workout. Works fine so far.
Have only tried USB2; gets ~20 Mbytes/sec (that might be limitted by the host computer).

Note: The built-in cable is only ~5" long; it does come with an extension cable.

A good fast USB 3.0 drive, the LED glows blue when passing data at 3.0, but this handy feature seems to be intermittent, thus leaving me wondering if at times it really is running at 3.0 speeds.

Update - Turns out the cable at the body end worked its way loose enough that 3.0 was intermittent. Reseated, and all is a go at high speed.

When I buy external drives, I ALWAYS look for ones with a built-in cable. It's convinient not to have to think about always bringing a USB cable with you and not losing it or breaking it (insertion and removal). I bought the EagleTech drive years ago for that exact reason. It's time for an upgrade both in term of size and speed (USB), so I found the Buffalo PZU3. I'm cheap, so I went for the black model instead of the prettier and costlier silver or red models (exact same thing just different colors). So, I would say the built-in cable is a BIG plus and the major reason why I bought this.

The performance is pretty good, even _without_ the TURBO-PC-EX driver! I put an .iso file of Microsoft Office 2010 professional on this drive, then installed the whole thing to my computer -- and I'm NOT exaggerating -- it took 40 seconds to finish the installation of Office! Yes, it's on a new computer (June 2012), but at least that means this drive is not dragging the rest behind. Here's some numbers from CrystalDiskMark:

USB 3.0 without TURBO PC EX driver, 1000 MB sample, 1 pass
Seq: read 99.71 MB/s, write 99.70 MB/s
512K: read 35.11 MB/s, write 40.14 MB/s
4K: read 0.436 MB/s, write 1.030 MB/s
4K QD32: read 0.419 MB/s, write 1.051 MB/s

In the same format, numbers _with_ the TURBO PC EX driver:
100.7, 100.6
37.07, 46.90
0.465, 8.704
0.539, 8.439

As you can see, the TURBO PC EX driver did significantly improved the benchmark performance, especially at the lower end. It probably just grabs more memory for write-caching. But hey, I've got plenty to spare.

The ASUS motherboard comes with its own flavor of USB 3.0 acceleration driver, but, at least by the numbers, it didn't improve anything at all.

Stay away! So many problems with Buffalo products. I purchased the cheaper Buffalo MiniStation and it failed within a week. Buffalo sent me a new MiniStation Extreme 1TB (had to pay shipping + was told no warranty on replacement) so I used it for about 3 months. The drive caused problems when I would boot, so it mostly stayed unplugged. After 3 months of usage, the drive just failed. Drive has been sitting on my desk and it has never moved. I cracked open the case because I was told replacement models don't have a warranty to find a Toshiba 1TB drive. The drive itself is what failed, but I was lied to when I asked what brand of drive was inside.

I also had Buffalo's NAS system which also failed 2 days after the warranty date. Buffalo said sorry, buy another one! Terrible support, terrible products, and terrible warranty system. Avoid these guys like the plague.
