Very simple and easy to operate.

Never again Bushnell..first you screw up your scopes, now you're trying to sell junk that can get someone seriously lost and in trouble.

The unit can also be slow to lock into satellites in new locations, especially in wooded areas.

This GPS points in the correct direction to get you back to your desired location only "some of the time". This is very frustrating, especially when you are hunting in unfamiliar country. I want to count on it to get me back to camp or my truck every time so I test it when returning to my desired location and it points to the correct location about 75% of the time. I have had it point 180 degrees off, even when I ccould see my desired return point from 1/4 mile away. It is unreliable. 25% error in operation is unacceptable.

I've had the same experiences with the Backtrack Point 3 that reviewer "hunter" describes- wildly inaccurate readings, commonly 90 degrees and occasionally 180 degrees off target. The only other Amazon reviewer, "Terry", makes no mention of this problem and gives the unit 5 stars, but I note that Terry is from Overland Park, KS, the home of Bushnell Corporation.

The problem is that the digital compass must be re-calibrated very frequently. Recalibration is mentioned near the end of the instructions when describing compass mode, an option not likely to be used by many purchasers of this product and thus often not read. Bushnell does not warn users upfront of the unreliability of the compass arrow pointer and its need for frequent recalibration. Any GPS-type unit this unreliable should NEVER be used alone for guidance in unfamiliar wilderness areas or other critical situations.

According to the instructions, when you're ready to leave your car or other start point you simply power up the unit, hold the Mark button down until the Distance To Location changes to zero, then turn the unit off and go. When ready to return to your marked start-point you just power up and follow the arrow.

WARNING: Don't head off immediately in the direction of the arrow, as it can be 90 or more degrees off-target and can remain that way even after you travel some distance, especially if you are moving in a straight line. Recalibrate first by rotating the unit in a figure 8 motion several times, pointing in all directions and walk in a circle. (Bushnell has a demo video on their website.

This backtracker is great because it's simple to use and, more importantly, would be easy to set up and use even under the stress of being lost (which can be considerable). For years I have carried two compasses (in case one breaks in the field), but even with that I was badly "turned around" in early October this year while upland hunting in a familiar location. Somehow I misplaced my present position so while I followed my compass, I missed an important landmark and was on my way in the wrong direction to a long overnight stay in the woods, in a down-pouring rain. Fortunately my son heard and answered my distress signal (gunshots) that were nearly muffled in that rain. The upshot is, I selected the Bushnell Backtrack Point-3 for it's small size and 3 point capability as a back-up to the compasses. Being old-er, I still don't trust battery-reliant gizmos with my life; BUT, I'm very, very happy to have it as a back-up to turn to when I may need it again. I've tested it all the ways I could think of, in thick conifers, under cliffs, in the rain. Sometimes I had to move a little (never more than 15 feet or so) to get a satellite lock, but it always locked-on and it seems very accurate. It is VERY important to calibrate it per the instructions by waving it in a figure-8 pattern. Once I didn't do this and the compass seemed to be off by 25 degrees or so. Also, note that the compass points to true, not magnetic, north. This is important to me as the magnetic declination where I hunt is about 16 degrees west.

I have NOTHING negative to say about this product. I have read some critical reviews. With that being said... this is NOT a military GPS unit. It is an affordable, quality and easy to use GPS. So... Let me see if I can clear up a few things...

1)Read, understand and follow the instructions
2)GPS is designed for outdoor use and clear skies.
3)It needs to be held horizontal while in use.
4)It should be "calibrated" each time you stop/start. (Move in a figure 8 direction, ref: 1 & 3)
5)Satellite icon will flash while looking for a signal. It will stop once one is acquired.
6)The arrow will always point North while in compass mode... NOT the direction of travel!
7)Travel data is given in a straight line from "A" to "B".
8)It will NOT tell you, "In 100ft, turn left" or "TA-DA", when you've reched your destination.
9)There WILL be clouds, trees, canyons, buildings, etc...
(10))Batteries WILL die... ALWAYS carry a reliable, backup compass!

HAPPY TREKKING

My wife and I tried it out and it pointed 90 degrees from the line of sight to the car. I will be returning this item to Amazon. I view it as completely worthless. If it ever did point at the car how would I know. I would do as well flipping a coin.

Not bad if you want to look like an idiot walking around in circles and waving the device around like a wounded bird. Probably alright if you are out in the woods
where no one will see you but in a parking lot ????????. Also I can't walk through walls. I also would have returned it but it was a Chritmas present and the packaging got tossed.
