I got this about 2 weeks ago and have been buring DVDs ever since. Very reliable product so far. All my recordings have been successful. I've been using this (and the plextor video capture unit CONVERTX) to transfer all my VHS-C tapes to DVDs. It works wonderfully.

A couple of notes here: (1) the model number as labeled on the unit is wrong, D-RW8-U2; (2) It comes with power adapter, but I have been using it without attaching any extra power. Host provided power seems to be sufficient.

an update: the power adapter actually is for the firewire connection. As the unit does not have power supply itself, it will need a power boost for the firewire connection.

Another update in 2006: Real bad support from buslink. When I need to update my firmware, they are simply no help (you got the latest firmware). A few emails later, buslink support simply stopped responding to my email...A slimline DVD burner is probably not a good idea unless you can stand the slow DVD writing speed.

If there was a "zero stars" rating, I would give it a zero. This drive is supposed to work on both a Firewire and USB 2.0 connection. Our system has both and it won't work with either one.

When connected to the Firewire the system freezes before even getting to Windows. We tried other devices on the Firewire and they work fine. We tried the device on another computer with the same results.

When connected to the USB 2.0 port, the system boots, the lights come on, the drive spins, but Windows displays an error in the SysTray - Device will not start. We tried another device on that port and it works; we tried the device on another system with the same results.

We followed the troubleshooting steps in their manual, updated our Windows 2K and BIOS, and have the same results. The drive simply does not work.

We contacted BUSLink by email (they have no 1-800 number). Their response was to follow the warranty return policy (which requires a long-distance call) or return it to Amazon.com.

Although the order is placed through Amazon, the drive is shipped from ANTonline, and their return policy is to contact BUSLink first.

So now we're going in circles!

The only thing worse than defective devices is a manufacturer's lack of customer support.

Don't buy this device. Purchase one from a major manufacturer, or go to your local electronics store where you can be assured of a quick return policy.

the items did not work at all. the drivers can not be installed. I have returned both items to amazon. too bad!
