4.0 out of 5 stars Not Perfect, But I Can't Live Without It
I've been using the Butler flossbrush for years. I find it's the only flosser that feels comfortable in my mouth and reaches everywhere. I really hate to wrap floss around my fingers (cuts off the circulation!) and find I can't floss hard enough or correctly.

Our children's dentist gave us one of these. We tried it, and the oldest of our children (10 years old) insists on using it every night. It works for her, but for the rest of us it gets too loose after one or two teeth and has to be re-tightened. 4.0 out of 5 stars Not Perfect, But I Can't Live Without It, June 16, 2010

I've been using the Butler flossbrush for years. I find it's the only flosser that feels comfortable in my mouth and reaches everywhere. I really hate to wrap floss around my fingers (cuts off the circulation!) and find I can't floss hard enough or correctly.

Yes, it is true about what others say about the floss becomming loose too quickly. Some things that help: initially pull out the floss and keep it dry (less slippery), wind it very firmly 3 times around the little knob, wrap it over the prongs, then around the knob another 3 times and hold the end down firmly against the handle while you floss. Floss between teeth all the way under the gums, but not so it's uncomfortable in any way. Swivel the flossbrush while flossing up and down to the left and right to floss the "corners" of each tooth. That should get all the plaque off that the toothbrush can't reach. You may still have to rewind a couple times.

As far as cleaning: After cutting the floss off with the little cutter on the handle, you can rinse the head off and let it dry. This will discourage bacteria. If you have special concerns (like you have a cold or sore throat), swab it off with some disinfecting alcohol.

Now, don't tell Butler, but, after you run out of floss, don't throw the flossbrush away, just buy plain floss, cut off what you need and just wrap it around the flossbrush as I describe above. The flossbrush will last until the little knob pops off out of sheer exaustion.

I have always liked Butler products. They seem to be better quality. One of the very few companies I do feel a loyalty to. Goofy maybe, but there you have it.

Our children's dentist gave us one of these. We tried it, and the oldest of our children (10 years old) insists on using it every night. It works for her, but for the rest of us it gets too loose after one or two teeth and has to be re-tightened. She seems to have developed a technique of keeping a finger pressed against a particular position on the floss to keep it tight.

It's an interesting design -- it has the potential to be a much more efficient use of floss than wrapping it around your fingers, because you only use a few inches at a time. If you can keep it from coming loose constantly.

Personally, I will stick with traditional floss for myself and disposable plastic flossers for the younger children. Simple and affordable.

I miss my Floss-o-matic (or something like that) that does not seem to be made any longer. It had a better way of locking the floss. This one is an acceptable replacement.

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money, November 27, 2011
This review is from: BUTLER DENT FLOSBRUSH MINT Size: 861RA (Health and Beauty)
I have a really old flosser that I love (John O. Butler Flos Flosser), but bought this for travel because I did not want to lose the other one. The floss that they use is cheap and cannot be re-used without breaking. It is hard to keep the string taunt and in order to do so, the floss breaks and has to be re-strung all of the time. The area between the tines is small and I have trouble getting it in between my back teeth. Even with wrapping the string 3x and then 10-15x, the string does not stay taunt. I read that the John O. Butler company was bought about 20 years ago by a different company who still uses that name or uses the name Gum or Sunstar. The quality seems to have really gone downhill. Sad.

Not the best, but not the worst either. The handle is very short, head is not very wide at all (I have a difficult time with some of my molars), and like all the other reviews, the floss slips out constantly. Even when I wrap it 5X in both directions, it slips at least once, and most times I have to fix it twice. That said, for me it is still easier than using plain floss that cuts the circulation in my fingers, and I like it better than all the little plastic flossers that are short and bend and just fill up landfills faster. Overall far from perfect, but I haven't found a better solution yet.

3.0 out of 5 stars better try flossaid instead, October 17, 2011
This review is from: BUTLER DENT FLOSBRUSH MINT Size: 861RA (Health and Beauty)
A much better product is:
[...]

I've had 5 or 6 of these things. The head doesn't hold the floss tight enough unless you really wrap it tight, which is hard to do, but causes it to eventually break.

If this is all you can get your hands on, then by all means use it, but since you're on Amazon, you better go with the MADE IN USA minimalist packaging Flossaid that I've linked to in this comment section.

1.0 out of 5 stars Terrible, April 23, 2011
This review is from: BUTLER DENT FLOSBRUSH MINT Size: 861RA (Health and Beauty)
The floss shreds often, fails to stay secured no matter how much it is wrapped around the flosser, and is a huge waste of time. The handle is also very short, which makes it difficult to grip, and the angle isn't ideal for flossing. I bought this item to replace a Glide flosser, which doesn't seem to be available anymore. Don't waste your money on this product. It'd be easier to just use Oral B flossing tape and your hands.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Design, April 23, 2011

I have purchased several of this product over the years, and I like it better every time I us it. The positives are ease of use, reach, and simplicity of operation. One negative is it should have more floss on the spool, or inexpensive replacable cartridges. But there is qute a bit of floss, so it actually is a small price to pay for great oral care.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect, if you know how to use it, April 16, 2011
This review is from: BUTLER DENT FLOSBRUSH MINT Size: 861RA (Health and Beauty)
After the floss came out of the hole you need to reel it 3 times in, only then put it on the holder's horns, next reel it 10 times in again, and only then fasten it in the cutter. Use it once for all the teeth. Next unwind the floss, pull another 1 inch of it from the handle through the hole, and repeat the procedure described in the 1st sentence above. Once a while trim the excess of the used floss with the cutter.

This product is not worth you time or money. It is so small that it hardly works for an adult and it does not hold the floss in place so you are always having to re-string it. Don't waist you money with this one.
