WOW.,

This review is from: Baaba Maal - Live at Royal Festival Hall (DVD)
This is some really mind blowing stuff from one of the greatest voices on the planet today. This DVD showcases Baaba Maal's entire range, from the infectious groove of "African Woman" to the subtle and touching "Koni." I'd really like to know where the footage on the title screen comes from. It shows drummers playing the beat to "African Woman" with a line of women dancing to it. If anyone knows where this is from, please e-mail me at ornate_colon@yahoo.com and let me know. I highly recommend this DVD to anyone. Also, if you like this music, you should check out 'Afropop Worldwide' on your local public radio station.

Good if you like Baaba's Music,
This review is from: Baaba Maal - Live at Royal Festival Hall (DVD)
The quality of this DTS DVD is not at all bad, though not up to the standard of "Eagles - Hell Freezes Over". It is the only DTS DVD I have seen that also has a Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack so you can make direct comparisons between the two formats. The video quality is good, with the costumes colorful. Even if you've never heard of Baaba Maal but like Youssou N'Dour or other African musicians, give it a try.

Brilliant !,

Brilliant concert from one of Africa's most promising artists. Baaba is a great singer, dancer, composer and he has a clear vision of his art. The show has some beautiful initimate moments. There is quite a bit of magic between the dancers and they all seem to have a good time themselves which certainly reflects in the performance. I love the way Baaba creates a modern version of African music by combining different elements of African music in a new and unpredictable way, and all the while keeping the acoustic quality of the music alive. He shows you do not necessarely need to sell out to Western (commercial) taste in order to create a modern African sound. I never heard Baaba Maal before this DVD, but I'm certainly a fan now !

From the the top of the show to the final moments, this is one of the best concerts I have purchased in years. Sure, it's a fairly low budget performance. It's a shame Baaba Maal has not achieved Real World level rock star status. But, his talent, his heritage, and his message of abundance and joy ("Peace in the family / when there's peace in the heart") are clearly conveyed across the entire performance. My life is better for having purchased this dvd. Thank you, and blessings to you Baaba Maal and your amazing band.

Baaba Maal is a pure gift to the world from Africa. Next to seeing him in concert this DVD is great. Full of the dancing and jokester antics of the early years. Blessings on Baaba Maal. "Subhanallah" as he says!
