Editorial Reviews

Baadasssss! starring, written and directed by Mario Van Peebles, is based on Melvin Van Peebles journey from the inception through to the release of his 1971 film Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song. The film also stars David Allen Grier, Nia Long, Joy Bryant and Adam West. Sweet Sweetbacks is considered the original "blaxploitation" film, which spawned a film genre that has hugely since influenced black popular culture. In the spirit of the film and the originals’ accompanying soundtrack, Baadasss is a compilation that ties together the revolutionary themes of the film, Black representation, community, art vs. commerce and the sacrifices necessary to maintain artistic autonomy. Featured on the soundtrack are Pete Rock Featuring Pharoahe Monch, Jean Grae, King Floyd, Zap Mama, War, Roy Ayers, and Eric Roberson.
