Book Description

P and up
Beginning in Spring 2001, Abrams began to reissue the backlist of original Laurent de Brunhoff Babar stories. For Fall 2001, Abrams presents Babar and the Ghost and Babar and the Wully-Wully. Both books are reproduced from the original artwork. Babar and the Wully-Wully, originally published in 1975, brings a lovable companion and pet to the children of Celesteville. Everyone in the country of the elephants is delighted by the unusual creature. But when Babar's family takes Wully-Wully to the country for a picnic, the little pet attracts the attention of Rataxes the rhinoceros. Wully-Wully is snatched away from the children and trapped in the city of the rhinos. Arthur and Zephir rescue Wully-Wully in a daring mission, only to have him stolen again in a mad rhino stampede! In the face of a war between the elephants and the rhinos, Flora bravely visits Rataxes-all alone. She convinces him to free the Wully-Wully so that everyone can enjoy the rare creature. This story teaches children that sharing with others brings new friends and adventures.

This is a really terrific story. By capturing and then befriending the charming little Wully Wully, the elephants learn some good lessons about respect and kindness. After some adventures, the young elephants and the Wully Wully do what Babar couldn't - establishing peace with the Rhinos! This children's book has a nice blend of tension, adventure, and all sorts of little lessons to take away from it.

1.0 out of 5 stars Babar and the Wully Wully, June 22, 2007

This review is from: Babar and the Wully Wully (Hardcover)
There are so many wonderful children's books available, i'm not sure why anyone would pick this one for their child. Pom, Flora and Alexander find a Wully-Wully, "an animal that is seldom seen" and take it home with them. One day on a picnic, it is kidnapped by Rataxes the rhinoceros. In the end, the Wully-Wully is recovered, but I am not sure why any parent would choose to introduce fear of kidnapping into our children when we could be reading them fun, educational stories that teach them about love and peace.
