Beginning in Spring 2001, Abrams began to reissue the backlist of original Laurent de Brunhoff Babar stories. For Spring 2002, Abrams presents Babar's Battle and Babar's Birthday Surprise. Both books are reproduced from the original artwork. Is everything as calm and peaceful in Celesteville as it seems? Celeste suspects Babar's enemy, Rataxes the rhinoceros, is up to no good. When the elephants discover that their beautiful lake is being drained and their water supply is gone, Babar knows that he might have to go into battle to get it back. As the elephants prepare to fight the rhinoceroses, Babar hopes that a clever plan might help avoid a war. Babar's Battle, originally published in 1992, shows young readers that wit and courage are far mightier than brute force.

Echoing recent political change and prescribing more peaceable strategies, Brunhoff adds still another episode to the annals of the popular elephant king. Urged by an evil witch, rhinoceros King Rataxes plots against Babar; he invites him to dine, but enjoys Babar's company so much that he forgets to have his soldiers take him prisoner. Next he steals the elephants' water and forces them into battle. Calling for single combat, Babar defeats the rhino (who has seized the advantage of having his back to the sun) by dazzling him with light reflected from his shield. About the Author
Laurent de Brunhoff has kept the spirit of Babar and his family alive for more than 50 years. He and his wife, author Phyllis Rose, divide their time among Key West, New York City, and Connecticut.

War. Mean rhinos, kind elephants. Conflict that takes the characters (Rataxes and his band, anyway) to the brink of violence...It's fine to anthropomorphize to make a point, and with Babar the point is fine, because he's kind, thoughtful, and peaceful. But the poor rhinos, the treatment they receive here, is pathetic... Please -- pass on this one. Go with Shel Silverstein or other rhino authors. Early Babar books, fine...

I think the title can be a little jolting, because who wants to teach their children about war. But if you're like me, and your children are exposed to NO television, this book is perfectly fine and a safe way to introduce a disagreement, or as they are calling it, "battle". There is nothing too rough about this book, but I also love the Wully-Wully book. I recommend all of the Babar books.
