Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 6-10-Wakeman captures the life of the athlete in an engaging style that makes frequent use of quotes, facts, and anecdotes. The subject's determination, passion for competition, and flamboyant manner are presented in 11 chronological chapters. Average-quality, black-and-white photographs appear throughout. From her early start as an American Athletic Union one-woman team to her involvement with creating the Ladies Professional Golf Association, Zaharias's drive to excel is clearly conveyed, as is her influence on women's sports in the United States. Adolescents interested in biographies and/or female athletes will appreciate this title, but Russell Freedman's Babe Didrikson Zaharias (Clarion, 1999) is a more attractive and more compelling alternative.

4.0 out of 5 stars Greatest Female Athlete of the Half-Century, February 27, 2001

This review is from: Babe Didrikson Zaharias: Driven to Win (Lerner Biographies) (Library Binding)
Wakeman uses many of the same resources and photographs as the Freedman biography, Babe Didrikson Zaharias: The Making of a Champion. Though she adds little new information about one of the greatest women athletes of the world, she writes competently and begins with the 1932 Olympics at which Babe won two gold medals for the javelin throw and the 80-meter hurdles, and a silver medal in the high jump. Mastering nearly every sport she attempted including basketball, baseball, and bowling, Babe's career continued as an amateur and professional golfer until it tragically ended with her death at age 45. Because her fiercely competitive spirit and swaggering self-confidence was unusual in a woman during the first half of the 20th century, Babe became a legend in sports, paving the way for future women athletes. This is a useful addition to sports biographies and women's history.
