4.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful music and a lot of talking
I loved the movie babe and it's music is truely great, though i must confess that when I got the CD and started hearing it I was a bit disapponited, as I found out much of the running time of this CD is in fact not music but quotations from the movie... as much as I adore Ferdinand the Duck I didnt buy the CD to hear him talking, i bought it to hear the soundtrack.

2.0 out of 5 stars There is a major problem with this otherwise wonderful CD
I'm not trying to disrespect the music of this movie in any way, shape, or form. The music (classical composed by Saint-Saens) is absolutely beautiful, if I may use an understatement. But if you purchase this CD, be aware that those who put it together almost succeeded in putting half the film script on there as well.

It was very irritating, because what I wanted to...

I'm not trying to disrespect the music of this movie in any way, shape, or form. The music (classical composed by Saint-Saens) is absolutely beautiful, if I may use an understatement. But if you purchase this CD, be aware that those who put it together almost succeeded in putting half the film script on there as well.

It was very irritating, because what I wanted to hear was the music from the film. Instead, I had to listen to the lines of the film during the music of the film. If that were what I wanted to hear, I would simply sit in front of a television and pop the tape into the VCR and watch the movie BABE. I can understand if the makers of this soundtrack wanted something in it to appeal to the children. Then, leave in the mice singing "Blue Moon" during the credits. And leave in James Cromwell's solo rendition of "If I Had Words" - but leave it at that. They should have left the rest of the music untainted.

What I'm probably going to do now is find the most comprehensive collection of Saint-Saens's music I can find on compact disc. At least then, my listening pleasure will not be interrupted by conversations between Babe the pig and Ferdinand the duck.

1.0 out of 5 stars dissapointing, January 28, 2005
This review is from: Babe: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (Audio CD)
i should have read these reviews before i bought this cd. not only is there talking, which i am not interested in and find annoying, but they also cut the songs shorter! i was interested in a nice musical arrangement that i could play during the day for my family while the tv is off. if i wanted to hear the lines of the movie, i would put in the dvd that i already have. what a waste of money - you can find my copy of this cd on sale at ebay, used only once.

As a high school student looking to major in musical composition in college, I purchased this CD for its beautiful main theme (written by Camille Saint-Saens and adapted for the movie) and was horribly disappointed to find that theme has very limited playing time. Right from the very first track, the regal and majestic intentions of Saint-Saens are destroyed by a trio of rats singing his work. What is that????? Get rid of the barnyard choir, I want real, quality music of a real orchestra. There is also too much talking. I want the music that appeared in the movie, instead I got the character's voices rambling for half the CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Replay of the Movie, April 15, 2011
This review is from: Babe: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (Audio CD)
This soundtrack is absolutely first rate in terms of the performances and also the recordings from the movie "Babe" (1995). The performances by the Victorian Philharmonic Orchestra and the original writing of Nigel Westlake in addition to many selections from the famous composer Saint-Saëns make for a truly first-rate audio experience.

It must be stated, however, that this disk is really only for those who saw the movie itself first, because much of the voice soundtrack is included in this release. That means that, if one has not seen the movie, much of this recording will be "lost" on the listener. In addition, as one can see from the numerous reviews on this disc, if you are interested in music only (without any voice sound track), you likely will not enjoy this release. But for those who have been entranced by that magical movie "Babe" and wish to relish in its richness through the audio medium, this disc is superb.

It's fun, too. If you know the story well, you can laugh at the Duck ("Ferdinand"), be touched by the Ewe ("Mom"), and follow the story as the farmer ("Hoggett") and the pig ("Babe") as they explore their "common sense of destiny." It's a magical tour through a magical story, but in some ways, despite its child's orientation, it is deep, serious, reflective fare.

There's no purpose in comparing this disc to the latest cycle of Beethoven piano sonata cycle recordings, or the most recent release of a Mozart piano concerto. That's not the purpose of this disc. But if you were enchanted by this movie and want to think about it more while you listen to excepts of truly good music, this is a winner.

1.0 out of 5 stars Ugh., July 24, 2010

This review is from: Babe: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (Audio CD)
One of the worst soundtracks I've ever bought, simply for the fact that they put all the damn movie quotes into the songs.

WHY?! Why would they do this?! This is a MUSICAL SCORE - not a damn sound board! I cannot express myself angrily enough. I am sorely sorry I spent money on this piece of crap. I wanted music, not the movie, that's why I bought the MUSIC.

5.0 out of 5 stars Takes me back to the story records of yesteryear., March 6, 2009
This review is from: Babe: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (Audio CD)
I've loved this film for years and decided to pick up the soundtrack when I found it at a used CD shop for 75 cents. And I'd pay about 20 times that much for all this wonderful audio.

One of the main complaints people have about this CD is that it contains dialogue from the film, but this actually makes it enjoyable for me. Not that I don't absolutely love soundtrack CDs that allow you to hear the music and songs without all that dialogue getting in the way, but as someone who grew up in the 80's and 90's, when those story tapes and records containing music and dialogue from family films were still popular, this actually gives me a sense of nostalgia. Like those records, it's like a mini-audio of the movie, except it's about four times as long as those story records, at just under 40 minutes. The score that's present still shines beautifully on this disc, and even with the dialogue, you notice it more because you're not hearing as much dialogue, and you're not seeing the visual to go with it, so you pay more attention.

And as a lovely touch, they even included the sped-up singing tracks, sung by the mice in the film.

I think Varese has done a wonderful job with this CD. Yes, it'd be nice if an extended score-only CD without vocal songs and dialogue were released to fully show off the gorgeous score from this film, but this album is fun and reminds me of those classic story albums. I'd say it was worth every penny, but I only paid 75 cents, and it's worth a lot more than that.

3.0 out of 5 stars good for young kids, March 5, 2009
This review is from: Babe: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (Audio CD)
I loved the move and loved the music to it, but this cd is really just for kid. All they did was record the audio from the movie and put it on a CD so you hear the characters while the songs play.

If you've seen the movie, you already know skillfully blended the soundtrack is. This CD will make you laugh; it will make you cry. Truly one of the great movie soundtracks!
