Book Description

August 1, 1996 9 and up
Babe is a heroic pig with an unprejudiced heart. He spends his days watching Farmer Hoggett and Rex and Fly (world-class sheepdogs) teching their pups to be sheepdogs. Babe decides he wants to grow up to be a sheep-pig. This is the charming tale of what can happen when the underdog is an under-pig with an oversized heart. 2 cassettes.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 3-6. The heartwarming story by Dick King-Smith (Crown, 1983) was the basis for the Academy Award nominated movie Babe. Babe is a piglet won by Farmer Hoggett, a sheep farmer. Hoggett's dog Fly fills in for Babe's lost mother, and Babe surprises everyone when he displays an astounding ability to get the sheep to do as he directs. The ever-polite pig wins the trust of Hoggett's sheep through consideration and bravery, eventually becoming a contestant in a major sheep-herding competition. In this presentation, Stephen Thorne capably reads the story with a mild British accent. Though not overly dramatic, Thorne does a commendable job when he delivers the lines of the babbling Mrs. Hoggett and the old sheep, Ma. The straightforward presentation has no sound effects, music, or message telling listeners to flip the cassette. While most youngsters know the story, the message of determination and politeness bears repeating.

Review

Better known as Babe, this amazing pig not only succeeded at the Grand Challenge Sheep-Dog Trials, but charmed movie audiences of children and adults alike. The original story of a pig who decides to train for the all-important job of herding sheep is a charmer. Dick King-Smith is a master of stories about animal with personality. His characters mix courage and sweetness in delightful measure. Babe's story is not sugar-coated, but it succeeds because of the characters' inherent quality and charm. Stephen Thorne narrates Babe's story with ease and wit and never neglects King-Smith's finely tuned sense of kindness. This [HighBridge] audiobook can easily become a family favorite. -- The Christian Science Monitor, February 27, 1997; Audiofile, Dec/Jan 1998/1999

This is the story that inspired the Babe movie: enjoy almost two hours of fine audio narration in which reader Stephen Thorne adds high drama and action to the story of a pig who searches for a way to escape his fate. This complete, unabridged story will appeal to all ages. -- Midwest Book Review

This is a wonderful story and the narrator makes it even more of a treasure...he nails the emotion and voices perfectly. Our whole family enjoys listening to it...it's always included on family road trips. The last line perfectly sumarizes the plot and the audiobook itself with the high praise: "That'll do."
