5.0 out of 5 stars Have more fun!
This book is a great help to building your skill as a happy camper. This book covers all the basics of what to bring, how to use it, "Hygiene Hijinks", group dynamics, games, and much more. My favorite section is about the food. Sleeping well and eating well are the keys to keeping everyone happy, and this book will help you learn how to do it. The recipes are easy to...

3.0 out of 5 stars Best for Beginners
After deciding to start backpacking with my husband and his brother (both very experienced backpackers, one an AT thru-hiker), he thought this might be helpful for me. It's really great if you've never spent a night in the woods before, or are planning to go only with a group of other inexperienced women. I had hoped for more on distributing weight in a pack...

The recipes are easy to follow, delicious, practical and unique. I have shared this book with all the kids I know who have ventured off on their first camping trips alone, and they rave about it, too! Babes in the Woods is not the only backcountry guide you will need, but the unique information and easy to use format makes this one special.

After deciding to start backpacking with my husband and his brother (both very experienced backpackers, one an AT thru-hiker), he thought this might be helpful for me. It's really great if you've never spent a night in the woods before, or are planning to go only with a group of other inexperienced women. I had hoped for more on distributing weight in a pack specifically for a woman's frame, or gear that is tailored for women. It didn't really help me in either, the advice on gear is really for raw beginners and doesn't go into any of the high quality gear that is out there. The weight estimates of what you should carry seem really high. It doesn't talk at all about hiking in mixed-gender groups. Still, if you've never been backpacking and want an idea of what to take and what to expect, it does ok. But if you've spent any time in the woods previously, it's nothing earth-shattering as far as advice goes. The recipes for trail food were what I found most helpful and I'm excited to try some of them soon. It was well worth the price of this book (used) just for those.
