Editorial Reviews

2011 debut album from the Indie Alt-Rockers. In 2008, Kevin Morby moved into Cassie Ramone's small apartment in Clinton Hill, Brooklyn, for a few months. Morby, who plays bass in Woods, and Ramone, who sings and plays guitar in Vivian Girls, wanted to start a band. They both missed the sweaty loft shows they used to play before their bands moved on to larger venues and longer tours. Justin Sullivan, who had played with Ramone in Bossy, began practicing with them on drums, and The Babies debuted as a three-piece in March 2009 at Dead Herring, their friends' loft in Brooklyn. They played a few times before asking Nathan Stark, formerly of Bent Outta Shape, to join on bass, and the full lineup's first shows were that summer. The Babies wrote music and played shows in fits and spurts, whenever they all happened to be in town for a week. They recorded their self-titled debut album with Jarvis Taveniere at Rear House Studios, which doubles as Morby's home; his vocals were done in his own bedroom. (Taveniere, Morby's bandmate in Woods, has also recorded Real Estate, Vivian Girls and Woods.)

Woods' indie melodies meet Vivian Girls' fuzz in this collaboration of Kevin Morby of the former and Cassie Ramone of the latter. The Babies' first record truly is a mix of both bands; 60's sped-up harmonies sung in a Titus Andronicus style over Sonic Youth Daydream Nation and Experimental Jetset chord changes. Kevin and Cassie are `Partners in Crime' in this interesting side-project that never reaches the level of the parent bands, but is still worth a few spins.

It is fairly common to buy an album and only like one or three songs on it. That is not the case here. Every song is reallllllly good! And, I must say, it is not because they found a formula that appeals to me and repeat it on every track. No. This is a very varied musical album. Some songs are poppy, some are folky, a couple are surfy, and one is straight up punk rock (Personality). I was already a fan of Woods and Vivian Girls, and other bands oft promoted to be of similar ilks, like Ty Segall, Coasting, Strange Boys, Best Coast, Dum Dum Girls, Iron & Wine, Thee Oh Sees, etc., but this album is definitely one of my favorites. And my 4 year old even likes it and sings along.
