Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

This introduction to alligators first follows a little one in Florida from the time she hatches out of the egg until, with the coming of cold weather, she digs a tunnel in the lake-side mud to wait for spring. Though lightly fictionalized, this account also provides facts about the physical features and habits of the species. The book concludes with 15 pages of information about alligators and their current and prehistoric relatives. The full-color paintings, effectively depict alligators in the wild. However, superimposing the type over the sometimes rather dark or mottled backgrounds makes the text a little harder to read than it should be for beginners. Still, this is an informative and accessible book for young readers. Carolyn Phelan

More About the Author

Ginjer L. Clarke writes fun, fact-filled nonfiction beginning readers about weird, wonderful animals. Her love for strange creatures started early, as the first story she remembers writing in the third grade was "The Strange Animal" about a small, pink-spotted imaginary creature called a Woofa. She loves that her job entails visiting zoos and aquariums, reading lots of books, and even watching TV for research. And she can work at home in her pajamas, which is a lifelong dream!

Ginjer's books, most of which are part of Grosset & Dunlap's All Aboard Science Reader series, have sold a combined total of more than 2 million copies worldwide. Her books Freak Out! and Gross Out! were on Publisher's Weekly's 2006 and 2007 lists of top 100 best-selling children's books. Her book Platypus! (Random House Step into Reading) was awarded the Maryland Library Association's 2005 Blue Crab Young Reader Award for Nonfiction and was selected by the National Science Teachers Association as recommended classroom reading. Her books have been favorably reviewed in Booklist, Horn Book, School Library Journal, Children's Literature, and regional newspapers and magazines.

Ginjer is an experienced and lively school, library, and conference presenter, who has appeared at many elementary schools, regional reading and writing conferences, statewide book festivals, bookstores and libraries, and even a zoo. She is a graduate of James Madison University and lives in Richmond, Virginia, with her husband, young son, and several silly-looking pets.

5.0 out of 5 stars Definitely See You Later, Baby Alligator, April 5, 2000
By
This review is from: Baby Alligator (All Aboard Science Reader) (Paperback)
Ginjer Clarke's didactic, yet simple and delightful prose, combine with Neecy Twinem's beautifully detailed illustrations of Florida's lush landscape to make "Baby Alligator" an adventurous and unforgettable read from start to finish. Geared toward children in grades 1-3, this book contains many interesting facts about our often misunderstood and sometimes feared animal friend - all told through the eyes of a baby alligator. Perhaps the final page best sums up this book: "Maybe now that you know more about alligators, you will not be too afraid of them. Just be very careful." The author and illustrator teach children (and adults) to respect and like - not fear - an animal that was almost hunted to extinction and that has been around since the time of the dinosaurs. I highly recommend this book to adults and children alike. Even I, practically a native Floridian (and much older than the 1-3 grader age group), learned many new interesting facts about alligators, with Baby Alligator as my guide.

5.0 out of 5 stars Grumpy Garret needs to get a grip., June 26, 2001

This review is from: Baby Alligator (All Aboard Science Reader) (Paperback)
I disagree with the "reviewer" below who didn't enjoy Baby Alligator. (Actually, it sounds like Garret may be ready for books in the level 3 series.) Baby Alligator is typical of books in the All Aboard Reading series (level 2)--full-page, color illustrations that lure young readers to the simple text. Baby Alligator is a brief introduction to alligators and crocodiles, and the book delighted my 7-year-old daughter. She proclaimed the illustrations "very good," and said, "I sure learned a lot about alligators." We look forward to reading Clarke's next children's book.

4.0 out of 5 stars A nice book, and a good read for first-graders, June 23, 2001
By
As a former teacher and current homeschooling mother, I find Baby Alligator to be at the correct reading level for my first-grader, and at the same time full of facts that a child can grasp at this reading level. The illustrations are well-done and not overly cute. Minus one star for all the exclamation points, but this book brought us much pleasure.
