An excellent first book for babies,
By A Customer
This review is from: Baby Animals (Board book)
This is an excellent first book. In fact, this was the first book that either of my children would sit through without wiggling, grabbing at the book, etc. etc.. The realistic yet friendly illustrations gained their attention, while the simple sentences (and the entertainment of watching mommy trying to sound like an elephant!) had them laughing and trying to imitate the animal sounds. My doctor has been through two copies of this book with his six children, and it seems to be a favorite with the other young children I know as well.

Poor quality pages,
This review is from: Baby Animals (Board book)
I love Gyo Fujikawa's work and was excited to get this, but the quality of the book itself is very low. We've had the book for 6 months or so now. For some reason the pages get sticky and the ink transfers to the opposite page and sticks the book closed. Prying open the pages rips the surface, leaving ink and paper on the opposite page. This hasn't happened on any of our other board books. At first I thought we must have touched the book with food on our hands, but it happened on more and more of the pages and I think it's from contact with drool. Which, unfortunately, is pretty hard to avoid in the early months! I don't know how this book is different from others, but unfortunately it's not up to snuff.

no strange text in this one,

If you have read some of Gyo Fujikawa's other books, like "Oh, What a Busy Day", then you know they can have some strange stories. Why include the one about the two kids who go out into the woods and die? Still, this book is great. The drawings all have a very relaxed soft feeling and the underlying lesson is to be gentle with animals. This is a good book to share with your child at bedtime, while he/she is cuddled in your lap. The last page is a special treat, lots of baby animals. My daughter loves play a version of "I Spy" when we get to that page, pointing out the owl or monkey or other baby animals as I call out their names.

Gorgeous and engaging board book,

Another treasure by Gyo Fujikawa! This board book is beautiful. Every page features now-vintage style rendering of baby animals frolicking with boys and girls. My 14 month old has loved this book for about 5 months now, and still does. She listens carefully to each page, and tries to touch the animals and make the same sounds they do. Each page warms the heart with Fujikawa's darling illustrations and provides lots of discussion opportunities with your toddler at his/her level, since most children are fascinated with animals at this age. "Look at the cow. What do cows say? Mooo.... See the cow with the boy? And the horsie next to the cow..." and "See the duckies? With the boys and the girls? What do duckies say..." and so on. The reviewer who said that the final page is a visual treat, with all of the animals and children together, is right on. Gyo Fujikawa's children's books are classics for a reason, and this one is a perfect example. Would make an adorable baby gift with other baby items or some other Gyo Fujikawa books. (A similarly wonderful book by another author is Richard Scarry's I Am a Bunny.)

Excellent,
This review is from: Baby Animals (Board book)
I would highly recommend any of Gyo Fujikawa's books. The artistry is beautiful and so real and the colors are soft not garish. I received my first of his books as a gift at a baby shower before my first child was born. It was a favorite of all three of my children and was looked at and read often. I am so glad I can still find this wonderful book and others of his through Amazon.com.

Opening one of Gyo Fujikawa's books is like taking a step, or ten, back in time - back to when I was cozily snuggled up with a parent listening, rather than being the parent reading. They are the comfort food of children's books for me. And, on top of it, my daughter absolutely loves this book.

I read this to my kids when they were babies and then they "read" it to me. Wonderful pictures and good lesson. Now I'm reading it to my grandchildren.

We have read this book many many times. It has many different animals with their respective babies. Wonderful pictures. The books is a different shape than most books, I think that is one of the reasons my son picks it so often.

I purchased this book for our grandbaby. It is a book we read to all our children and as an early childhood educator, I see it as a must have for young children. It is beautiful and easy to read to young ones.
