5.0 out of 5 stars Happy Hats, Indeed!!
I didn't buy this book on Amazon but saw it here after buying it at a well-known book store for much more....grumble grumble. Having said that, I have to say that this book is definitely worth every penny!

There are easy to follow patterns for over 25 different hats and each one is darling! How to decide which one to knit first?!

i purchased this book several months ago and have fallen in love with it. it has given me lots of different ideas to use in my own hat making. and every single one of the hats is darling. that being said, of the hats i have knitted from the book, each one of the patterns contains at least one mistake. as an intermediate knitter, i have recognized the mistakes and am able to "fix" the pattern so i can achieve the desired end however, for a beginning knitter or one who is unfamiliar with hat patterns, i would find that very frustrating. overall, a great book to add to any pattern book library but with a few drawbacks...

I have been knitting for about a year but still consider myself a beginner. This book is perfect for newer knitters because many of the patterns only require knowing how to knit, purl, K2tog,K3tog,yo,join new colors, use DPNs (which isn't hard - just a little awkward), and more. Since you are knitting hats, you will be using circular needles.

The beginning of the book has several illustrated pages of instructions on all the basics that I mentioned previously.

There are more advanced patterns, too. Cables, stranded knitting, etc. are used in a few patterns but there are basic how-to's alongside the pattern so you feel comfortable attempting them.

At the beginning of each pattern the author lists the yarn used, needle size, and skills needed in order to make the exact hat in the picture or one with your own color combinations using similar yarn. She also includes sizing for 0-6mos,6-12 mos,1-2 years, and 2 years and up.

I am almost finished knitting the Accordion Hat and it is coming out just like the one in the book - I am thrilled!

I highly recommend this book. Every hat is so sweet and you will want to knit every one of them for the little sweeties in your life!

5.0 out of 5 stars great book!, February 4, 2009
This review is from: Baby Beanies: Happy Hats to Knit for Little Heads (Paperback)
i was looking for a book of hat patterns which i could use to make baby hats and adapt to adult size to donate to the oncology floor of the hospital where my daughter works as a nurse. these are great patterns; clear, easily understood, logical. i haven't found any errors yet, a problem often encountered in other knitting books. (doesn't anyone test these things???) my only complaint is that altho there is a "yarn size" chart in the beginning, with the skein symbol with the number in it, the actual patterns do NOT have that symbol, meaning some trial and error for substitutions.
try making the accordian hat on 9's with vanna's choice in a sophisticated color duo and you'll have a cool hat for yourself. ditto for the beret with the eyelet band.

5.0 out of 5 stars If you have to choose between several baby hats book, this is definitely the one !!!!, April 1, 2009
This review is from: Baby Beanies: Happy Hats to Knit for Little Heads (Paperback)
I've read several baby hat books, but this one is by far the best, and the pictures are adorable. Of course it helps that the author is also a child photographer !!! Unfortunately she is based in Sydney (AU), otherwise I would definitely want to have a photo shoot for my son. I highly recommend you to go on her website (which is cited on the back of the book), and check her work. She is incredibly talented. About the book, I like that she used different textures of yarns, which make the patterns more interesting. As another person wrote in her review, she gives you the basics first, but then she also gives helpful tips along the way. But even if you don't knit one single hat out of this book (which is pretty hard considering that my hands were itching to start as soon as I opened it), it is already well worth it just for the pictures.

5.0 out of 5 stars Adorable hats!, January 19, 2009

I bought this book to add to my collection of baby hat patterns. I just love to make baby hats. This is a great book comparable with Itty Bitty hats. The directions could not be more clear with great picture to help guide you. I have now made three of the hats in this book, I have found one pattern with direction mistakes that make a cute hat, but not the one pictured. Some of the yarns are a bit difficult to find as the author is an Aussie, but substitutes are really easy. Even with these minor issues, this is a great book. Most hats are knit in a DK wool on size 7 circular needles. If you have a passion for baby hats, you'll really enjoy using this book.

I first checked this book out at the library. After seeing all the wonderful projects I just had to buy it. This is a great book filled with cute, colorful little hats to knit. I started off knitting the baby beret. The instructions were very clear and I completed the project in just a few hours. I've been knitting for about 1 year and I feel this book can be used by beginner and advanced knitter alike. Great way to use leftover yarn too.

3.0 out of 5 stars Cute, but errors!, December 12, 2010
This review is from: Baby Beanies: Happy Hats to Knit for Little Heads (Paperback)
This book has some GREAT hats in it... VERY cute, but I've found multiple errors in at least 3 patterns now. One I've been able to fix, by doing what I thought was intended and from the pictures included... the others I had at least an hour or more into the hat and ended up frogging it because I couldn't fix the problem myself. *grrr* Not happy about it at all. Luckily I checked it out from the library first before purchasing!

I would recommend this book if you know how to fix the problems, but if not... move on or you'll be frustrated!

The first knitting book I bought and I love this!! I've already made 3 hats and they came out wonderful! Amanda is very detailed on how to do each hat. She also listed the yarn she used and the size needles she used for each one so that way its easy to replace for different yarns of the same weight/grams. Love this!

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome book, March 4, 2009
This review is from: Baby Beanies: Happy Hats to Knit for Little Heads (Paperback)
I am a yo yo knitter. That is to say I've taken up knitting and failed at least 5 times in the past 8 years. Full on sweaters for a beginner would just take to long and having to look at the same colored yarn for such a long time. I would find that I made mistakes without even realizing it. I would get so frustrated having to undo and start again. Well my mother in law who is an avid knitter suggested baby hats. So I went searching for a book with baby hats that were not to over the top but different, . . with patterns that were doable and wearable. Well here it is. This book is awesome. I own quite a few knitting books for babies and kids and this one is one that actually has committed me to becoming an actual knitter. Who knows I mean even rise to the ranks of being a "real" knitter and not just some casual knitter. The patterns are absolutely adorable. Her directions are easy to follow and the photographs are stunning. I hate it when you want to do a project but you only get a picture of what the finished project will look like from the front view. Maybe because the author is also a photograprapher she resolved this problem. You will get several adorable views of babies/toddlers wearing these hats from several angles. Now, . . .that I am ready to commit to knitting, . . . if only she would come out with a kids line of clothing patterns. I'd be as happy as a clam!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Beanies!!!, February 20, 2009

I just received this book from the library and now I will be buying it here on Amazon. Every single hat and I mean every single hat is just adorable. When can you ever say that about a knitting book??? The patterns are easy to follow for a beginner and yet there are some challenging designs as well. Grab your circular needles and get knitting. There are so many babies and such little time....I highly recommend this book. Great job Amanda. Check out Amanda's blog and website..really fun.
