Great First Bible for Baby--4.5 stars,
By Medic (California) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Baby Bible Storybook (Board book)
This book is a great introduction for the youngest of children to the Bible, though I believe that more stories should be included, such as Moses leading the Israelites out of Egypt, the Passover, the miracles of Jesus, and some of the Parables. (For more stories about Jesus, the author has written Baby Bible: Stories About Jesus.) (This is the only reason why I give this book 4.5 stars instead of 5.)The book is definately tailored to infants and toddlers, and some of the messages that drawn from the passages are not necessarily ones that I would conclude--they are child-oriented. One example of this is in the story of God calling Samuel. I would think that the lesson learned would be "Listen for God's voice," but the lesson is that you can help God. The lesson from Abraham & Sarah having Isaac is to thank God for babies. As far as the quality of the book is concerned, it is the sturdiest board book I own, and the illustrations are well done. One thing that I enjoy about this book is that it is interactive, asking the child to make hand and body movements, as well as ending with a simple prayer. The illustrations provide, in some cases, more detail about the story than actually written, so there is room to grow with the child and enhance the story with more explanation from the adult. The following is a list of the stories included in the Baby Bible: God Made Everything (Genesis 1-2) Noah and the Animals (Genesis 6-9) God's Promise to Abraham and Sarah (Genesis 15, 18, 21) Jacob and the Angels (Genesis 28) Joseph's New Coat (Genesis 37) Moses Talks to God (Exodus 2-3) Two Brave Soldiers (Numbers 13-14) Joshua and the Walls of Jericho (Joshua 6) Samson, the Strong Man (Judges 13-16) Ruth's New Home (Ruth 1-4) Samuel Hears God (1 Samuel 3) David and the Giant (1 Samuel 16-17) Elijah Says a Special Prayer (1 Kings 18) Jonah and the Big Fish (Jonah 1-4) Daniel and the Lions (Daniel 6) Welcome, Baby Jesus! (Luke 2) John Baptizes Jesus (Mark 1) Jesus Visits Mary and Martha (Luke 10) Zaccheus Meets Jesus (Luke 19) Jesus Is Alive! (John 19-21) Peter Shares the Good News (Acts 1-2) Paul and the Bright Light (Acts 9)

It's never too early to start teaching your baby about Jesus,

I love this book and so does my 5 mo. old baby! The pictures are very bright and colorful. The content is perfectly designed for babies and on up to toddlers. I give this book as a baby gift to all our friends and family. It makes a wonderful gift. I have given over 25 away in the last two years. Everyone loves them . On the front page there is an area for you to write who the bible is to and who it is from along with the date. I think that this makes the baby bible very special.

Adequate, but the best I could find.,
This review is from: Baby Bible Storybook (Board book)
Many of the stories are too complex for babies and toddlers. For our 20 month-old we use only 4 of the 20 (or so) because of difficult content. Most of the actions mean you can't have the child sitting on your lap while reading the story. The actions, though, do help keep the child's attention. The pictures are simple enough for toddlers and babies, for adult tastes they definitely are too cutsey. The pages are very durable and withstand being handled by little hands. All in all, I'm still looking for a *good* Bible storybook.

Just what we wanted! Our two year old asks for it each night,

I couldn't imagine a better, gentler introduction to Christian teachings. Each of the Bible stories consists of a very brief page of text, facing a cheerful picture. All the familiar stories are there -- Noah's ark; David & Goliath; the birth of Jesus, etc. After each sentence of the story, there's something for your toddler to do. (``Clap your hands'' after we hear that Noah closed the door to the ark, for example.) Then at the end of each lesson is a very simple prayer. ``Dear God, help me be strong so I can help others. Amen.'' Our hearts melt when our son stumbles his way through the words. The text is upbeat and nicely phrased so that Catholics and Protestants can feel comfortable with it.

A Virtuously Indestructible Book Full of Bible Stories and Little Prayers,
By
This review is from: Baby Bible Storybook (Board book)
I bought this book for my son and his wife to read to their new baby daughter. The pages are very, very thick--a baby could sit on your lap and help turn the pages. THE BABY BIBLE STORYBOOK has short little stories and it is very interactive. For example, the first story is about how God Made Everything. Then you tell your baby to close her eyes to see how dark it is, and then open her eyes and see the light that God made when he made the moon, sun, and stars. Then tell the baby to, "Point to yourself, because God made you!" Then there is a very brief prayer, "Thank you, God, for making me. Amen."There are about twenty stories in this book with about two-thirds being from the Old Testament. The children will learn about Jonah, Daniel, Abraham and Joshua and many others before turning to the New Testament. Here we have stories about Jesus, Paul, and Peter. The brightly colored illustrations with the simple activities and brief prayers are included in every story and will make the Bible come alive for your youngster. What a fabulous introduction to the Holy Word for a child.

A great devotional Bible for very young children,
By A Customer
This review is from: Baby Bible Storybook (Board book)
One of my goals with all four of my children is to instill in them the desire to have a daily quiet time with the Lord, and so I do a short devotion with each of them before bedtime. I am using the Baby Bible Storybook with my 22-month-old. It is a hand-me-down from Big Sister, and has served us well through the years. With bright, eye-catching illustrations, simple text, hand-motions, and an easy-to-mimic prayer at the end of each story, it is perfect as a devotional Bible for very young children. My older daughter used it until she was about 3 1/2.

Perfect for Toddlers,
By A Customer
This review is from: Baby Bible Storybook (Board book)
This IS the book to use to teach your children Bible stories. The interactive methods (i.e. march like soldiers, give yourself a hug, etc.) make the stories more "real" to young ones. Each "lesson" contains the title, scripture the story is taken from, the story in children's term and 'actions' in order to act out the story.

Excellent, short bible stories for babies and toddlers,
By A Customer
This review is from: Baby Bible Storybook (Board book)
This hard-page book is perfect for the youngest child. The stories are concise and easy to understand and each lesson comes with a short prayer that the child can say by him- or herself. The pictures are a little too "cutesy" for an adult's taste, but my preschoolers love them.

My 2-yr old discovered this book and loves it!,
By A Customer
This review is from: Baby Bible Storybook (Board book)
We received this book in a big box of hand-me-down baby & toddler books. I just threw it in my kids' book drawer, never thinking we would read it, but my 2-yr old daughter found it and now she reads it every night, flipping through to her favorite stories. We're not a religious family, not even church-goers, but now that our daughter is so interested in learning about baby Jesus and the other stories in this book, we may try to bring religion - or at least some form of spirituality - into our lives a little more. At the least, the stories are good morality tales, on the 2-yr old level. A few of them are a bit harsh for a toddler (the lions were going to eat Daniel; Paul wanted to hurt God's people) but I tone those down when I read them. Also, it's a very sturdy & well constructed book, better than the typical board book - our copy is very old and is in good shape - and the illustrations are adorable. If you're looking for a first Bible, this is a great one!

Not What I Expected,
This review is from: Baby Bible Storybook (Board book)
After all the good reviews this bible got I was very disappointed when it actually arrived. First the good things: Love all the interactive things it asks you to do with your child. I really think it will keep them focused. Also, I think the language used is just right. Not too complex but not too simple. However, I thought they left many important things out and many things were not explained. I realize that they are trying to keep the stories short but when it doesn't even say that Jesus was the son of God or why Jesus died, I think they are carrying simplicity too far. |
