From the Inside Flap

Baby boomers—arguably the largest segment of the population—are entering their retirement years at an unprecedented rate. With more discretionary time and increased longevity, this group is searching for a way to make a meaningful impact with their lives.

Baby Boomers and Beyond explores the opportunities and challenges that the older adult population presents for the Christian community. Author Amy Hanson dares church leaders to let go of stereotypes about aging and embrace a new paradigm, that older adults are for the most part active, healthy, and capable of making significant contributions for the Kingdom of God.

Hanson offers a realistic view of the boomers and reveals what matters most to this age group: staying young, juggling multiple relationships, and redefining retirement. By tapping into their needs, pastors can engage this burgeoning group and unleash the power of the boomer generation to enhance and strengthen the mission of the church.

The book digs into the questions that arise when working with this growing population. How do we let go of "one-size-fits-all" ministry? What spiritual growth can we encourage? How do we meld multiple generations? And, most important, how do we harness the potential of this new generation? These are important considerations for those who want to be serious about ministering with aging boomers.

Baby Boomers and Beyond contains numerous illustrative examples from churches and baby boomers across the country and offers church leaders best practices to put in motion.

From the Back Cover

Praise for Baby Boomers and Beyond

"Amy Hanson does a brilliant job of reminding us that the most powerful and under-utilized source of Kingdom impact is the fifty-plus generation. I have seen firsthand how the mission of Jesus offers them more fulfillment than retirement, golf, or the next sight-seeing trip ever could." Dave Ferguson, lead pastor, COMMUNITY / Movement Leader, NewThing

"If you are fifty, or thinking about turning fifty; if you are concerned for the church and long for generations to be unleashed in ministry and community, then this book is the resource you have been looking for." John Ortberg, senior pastor, Menlo Park Presbyterian Church

"In this powerful and impassioned book, Amy Hanson urges the church to better serve boomers so boomers can better serve others. It's simple and ingenious, revolutionary and reasonable, lofty and practical." Marc Freedman, author, Encore: Finding Work That Matters in the Second Half of Life, and CEO, Civic Ventures

"Well-written, practical, and full of insight based on current research, Baby Boomers and Beyond opens our eyes and hearts to new ways to embrace older adults, for the benefit of the whole church and to the glory of God."Dr. Sue Edwards, assistant professor of Christian education, Dallas Theological Seminary, and author of four books on church leadership and the Sue Edwards Inductive Bible Study series

"Amy Hanson reminds us of the work still to be done making disciples of an older generation. I encourage you to find ways to lead boomers into a dynamic walk with Christ and engage them in the mission of God's Kingdom." Ed Stetzer, president of LifeWay Research, www.edstetzer.com

"The insights and strategies for ministry with boomers and older adults as detailed in this book are a must read for all church leaders seeking to be faithful to God and who want to be engaged in Kingdom building."Rev. Dr. Richard H. Gentzler, Jr., director, Center on Aging and Older Adult Ministries, The United Methodist Church, and author, Aging and Ministry in the 21st Century

4.0 out of 5 stars A much needed wake up call January 6, 2011
Format:Hardcover
The purpose of this book is to serve as a wake-up call to the church. We are at an unprecedented time in history where greater numbers of people are living longer. Today's midlife and older adults represent a privileged generation having greater opportunities for education, wealth acquisition and influence than any before. Yet, church leaders often marginalize, even ignore, this vast army of disciples and servants.

This book addresses many of the challenges faced by today's Boomers. Readers will certainly have a better idea of what this generation faces as it encounters health issues, caregiving challenges, retirement, and family relationships. Amy's background in sociology and gerontology uniquely positions her to share quantitative research and observations.

However, the true value of the book to church leaders is the myriad of real-life examples of successful ministry and programs that Amy shares. She has interviewed successful program leaders from across the country and highlights best practices and innovations and ways to implement them in local settings.

Amy's passion is for Boomers to understand their unique calling within the body of Christ. She admonishes them to continue to grow spiritually and to live a life of faith and service that will inspire generations to come.

This is a "must-read" for pastors, church leaders, ministry directors and Boomers.

5.0 out of 5 stars challenged my idea of retirement December 22, 2010
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
loved this book...challenged my idea of retirement...not a time of rest, but a time to continue growing in my relationships with Christ and people...God will use me for His purposes if i let Him...great quote "the motivation for keeping the body healthy and in top condition should be about pleasing Him and keeping ourselves fit in order to best serve Him for as long as he desires." also, i will continue to grow...being over 50 does not mean i have finished learning or maturing. another quote "...not all adults who are past the age of fifty are particularly wise." OUCH! great reminder not to ever get to a point of believing i have reached a certain age where i don't have to give...that i can just sit back and take...reignited my desire to be serving Him when i take my last breath. i marked up this book and folded lots of corners!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Baby Boomers and Beyond October 26, 2010
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
Amy Hansen in her highly anticipated book clearly defines, segments and differentiates second half adult ministry.

Amy provides illustrative examples of ministry design by, with, and for the encore generation from around our nation based on her freelance research articles and Leadership Network Series papers; undergraduate bible and family ministry training and gerontology, human behavior advanced study; and youthful ministry.

She further makes the case for the need to hire a person for this diverse population segment. Having read and studied the book with the free discussion guide, I highly recommended Baby Boomers and Beyond.

Amy has a tremendous website [...] full of resources which you will want to consider visiting, sharing, and becoming involved.

You may further wish to consider (1) gifting her book to the staff and elected leadership of your church, (2) have Dr Hansen speak to your congregation and community, plus (3) offer a tri-mister small group study of her book. We have tried the first two and had positive results. We are yet to complete the third.

Based on Amy's energy, personality, passion, professionalism, and knowledge, she is an excellent paradigm crusader for second half ministry. Our experience was quite positive.
I highly recommend her as an accomplished speaker.
