Clad only in a diaper and multicolored cap, the smiling baby in Asch's engaging book examines a box of blocks. He then empties the box and climbs in, and is soon joined by a fox. When they climb out to play with blocks, an ox appears and he takes a turn sitting in the box (he barely fits). Grown-ups--and perhaps even toddlers--can anticipate what happens next: baby, fox and ox all end up in the box, which topples over and knocks down the blocks. Eventually, we say "Bye-bye" to fox and ox, and to baby, who climbs back into the box. Asch's rhyming text and luminescent pictures are perfectly simple, making this an ideal read-aloud. Ages 2-4.

PreSchool-- A simple but creative story with a rhyming text that explores the concepts of in and out. Baby throws his blocks out of a box, and fox and ox soon join in the fun. When the trio crawls into the box, over it goes, toppling the tower of blocks and bringing the story to an end. The spare text is matched with undetailed watercolor illustrations. Against a white background, the diaper-clad baby (who wears a baseball cap), along with the fox and ox, cavort with colorful blocks and a purple box, all of which are outlined in vivid orange. Barbro Lindgren's The Wild Baby Goes to Sea (Greenwillow, 1983) sports a similar plot, told in verse, of a toddler's creative play with a box. This is an okay book for babies and toddlers but I wouldn't rush out to buy it. While the artwork is bright and simple, the story is a bit bland, even for baby-faire.

The book begins with blocks in a box. It then proceeds to show a baby throwing the blocks out of the box, and the baby getting in the box. A fox and then an ox joins the baby. The baby and the fox play with the blocks. It is then time to clean up and go. "Bye-bye, Fox. Bye-bye, Ox. Bye-bye, Baby in the box."

Find following a little of the prose so you can judge for yourself:

Baby and the ox in the box.
Baby and the ox and the fox in the box...
knock down the blocks.

Three Stars. Okay read-aloud. Good use of words for babies. Average baby/toddler type of book.

My children LOVED this book when they were very small. They dissolved into giggles every time we read it together. The rhyming is fun, making it a great pre-reader. The drawings are delightful. I'm still looking for new copies to give as gifts. We are Frank Asch fans!
